LUNCH

Who feeds pigs to sheep? Why, Australian animal liberationists, of course:

Animal rights activists claimed yesterday to have fed pig meat to 70,000 sheep awaiting shipment to the Middle East in an effort to render them unsuitable for consumption by Muslims.

There’s doubt over the liberationists’ claim, but meanwhile I suspect I won’t be the only carnivore wondering about the potential taste sensation of these lamb-pork hybrids. I guess the only way to find out is to shoot them all and eat them. Thanks, critter activists!

UPDATE. One of the liberating porkers has been arrested. And a halal butcher says the whole ham scam was a total waste of time:

"All you have to do is leave the sheep for three days until the items they have been fed leave their bodies," said Mohamed El-Mouelhy, chairman of the Halal Certification Authority.

"As far as Muslims are concerned, it makes no difference because it is not a religious breach whatsoever.

"It might be a breach of local health requirements, but they should do more homework on halal dietary laws before they do this."

Use the brains, people. Use the brains!

Bacon, ham, pork chops...now lamb chops! They all come from the same animal!

"Sure, Lisa, a wonderful, magical animal!"

"It just don't add up!" Weird kind of animal liberationist, if you ask me, that would feed animal meat to the animals they want to be liberating. My guess is, it's just a bullshit story they concocted to get media attention.

Mint sauce? Apple sauce?

Check out what Harold Pinter had to say:

That was not a viewpoint shared by the roster of outspoken British and American antiwar luminaries who took turns at the microphone at last night's rally.

One was playwright Harold Pinter, who called Bush and Blair "liars, God-fearing Christians and murderers." Under Bush's leadership, Pinter said, the United States had come to resemble Nazi Germany in its ambitions.

"The U.S. talks constantly about weapons of mass destruction and rogue states, but, as we all know, it's the U.S. which is the rogue state par excellence," he told the crowd. "It is by far the most dangerous state that has ever existed."

Check out my blog for the link.

Hey Tim, Does Crikey! have a habit of pinching pictures with out credit to the photographer.

Wonder what shepig, or is it pieep, tastes like if it's fed with shredded animal liberationist?
It could be marketed as organic as well.
The jolly silly Sausage-Eater who laid claim to the act is now ducking and diving, now he has found out it is an offence to administer meat products to animals for consumption, mainly due to risks of BSE etc.
He may be in need of liberation when he gets locked in a very small cell with a very large pervert.
Have fun with "The Turk", Ralf!

"I guess the only way to find out is to shoot them all and eat them."

Nah, just shoot 'em and leave 'em where they fall. (The Kritter Huggers, that is!)

Yeah, not enough meat on their bones.

Pork 'n' lamb, mmmm....

hmm, habib, good points.

if you said 'hepig', i would instantly assume michael moore...as for 'shepig', all that comes to mind is barbara streisand.

shepig will go great with those cheese curds you brought back from minnesota, btw.

Looks like the animals would get destroyed anyway:

Contamination would mean the sheep would not be fit for human consumption and were likely to be destroyed because of disease fears.

... Idiots.

I dont know about the rest of you but it makes my blood boil.

If they were looking to gather support for their cause then this action will do the exact opposite - regardless of where you stand. Dressing up like sheep and bleating about it on the dock is one thing, poisoning the feed and putting a lot of farmers out of pocket is a f#@#@ng disgrace.

Ralf the amateur gentetic engineer has just been nicked by the Victorian Police, and is enjoying the comfort of a divvy van- giving him a first hand view of the conditions on a live animal carrier.
Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame, Ralf, because by the time you get out, you will be long forgotten, but the stupidity of your actions will be long remembered.
(If they wind up shooting all the critters, if I was the cocky exporting them I would leave the carcasses at Ralf's place, just to remind him of the success of his operation).

Doesn't this create increased danger of BSE or mad "sheep" disease? Feeding rendered animal products to other animals is supposed to be prohibited. It's more dangerous than GM foods for Pete's sake. Didn't anybody learn anything from England a few years back. Now all sheep in Australia will need to slaughtered and burned immediately to ensure the health of the sheep population.

Posted by: Charles at November 20, 2003 at 12:55 PM

Wouldn't it need less ammo, and cause less air pollution, to shoot and burn all the animal liberationists? With their high veg/protein diets they would go up like the Momford gas plant.

Posted by: Habib at November 20, 2003 at 01:09 PM

You gotta hand it to the guy, pretty clever way to stop the sheep being sold. No muslim country will take sheep suspected of eating pork. If it's proved to have been done then just the threat might be enough from now on.

Posted by: Pedro at November 20, 2003 at 02:17 PM

The animal liberationists should be force-fed pig meat until suitably bloated, then loaded, vomiting and retching, onto a live sheep carrier and taken to the Middle East, where they will prove attractive protein for starving Eritreans, Afghans and Iraqis. What more noble sacrifice could they make, giving up their meaningless lives on behalf of their four-footed friends?

Posted by: Freddyboy at November 20, 2003 at 03:16 PM

Isn't it MUSLIMS who are not supposed to eat pork rather than the sheep?

Animal liberationists seem to be confused as to the difference between muslims and sheep. Hint - sheep don't wear Kafiyeh (unless it's party night in Auckland).

Posted by: Paul Johnson at November 20, 2003 at 04:02 PM

Yeah but would a muslim eat a sheep they feared had been shagged by an animal activist. After all the sheep would be unmarried and not wearing a hajib or veil during the shaggin'. Hmmm. Better by some stock in Viagra looks like a whole another potential market in the animal rights movement.

My mother always used the brains when I was young. She cooked them in white sauce and parsley, but lambs brains Lebanese style is magnificent - drowned in olive oil, garlic and lemon and seared to a nice golden brown.

"It might be a breach of local health requirements, but they should do more homework on halal dietary laws before they do this."

Hilarious. How much you wanna bet that these fools pride themselves on their "multicultural awareness"?

Posted by: Dave S. at November 20, 2003 at 08:19 PM

They're imperialists! Forcing those Muslims into Western eating habits! And they're probably in bed with Big Soy! It's all about the sooooyyyy!

Posted by: scott h. at November 21, 2003 at 03:48 AM

I'm just guessing but I'll bet there's a lot of sheep porking already going on in the Arab World.

What do you call a man who walks into a Saudi souk with a sheep under each arm?

Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

Posted by: Ric at November 21, 2003 at 07:59 AM

I'm highly skeptical. I'd like to know how exactly this guy suposedly got the herbivore sheep to eat pork products. Even if he managed to have the sheep ingest the meat, I'm not sure the sheep could digest it. It would probably make it sick.

Posted by: Scott at November 21, 2003 at 09:32 AM

Only if shagged by a kaffir, wooly. Hmmm - reckon the animal activists might go for velcro gloves as well?
