ECONOMIC RACISTS NO MORE
Labor has abandoned plans to slow tariff reductions for the textile, clothing and footwear industries, thereby adopting Mark Latham's views from 2001. Good.
Posted by Tim Blair at December 1, 2004 09:24 AMI notice the SMH makes a lot in this article of the fact that Labour is dropping lots of its election promises. I wasn't aware that the *losing* party was expected to keep its election promises.
Posted by: Scott Campbell at Blithering Bunny at December 1, 2004 at 09:34 AMMaybe they have spent enough time listening to Keating to realise that when tarrifs go down, goods cost less, assisting working families in Australia, but I'm pretty sure that all the ALP anti-globals like Doug Cameron are probably very peeved off about the possibility of people in Asian nations being able to get more work (thus helping them out of real poverty).
Tim B,
If you identify tarrifs (which apply to goods) with racism (which applies to people) then you will only succeed in making racism more popular with the tarriff-loving masses.

Um, Jackoff, if you read the second linked-to post, you'd figure out that it was Latham who did that.

My apologies for attributing this dumb moral equivalence to Tim B. I can see now why a majority of Australians had reservations about Lathams political credentials.
Quentin George: it is ok to argue with me, but only when I am wrong.
Parliament's question time had the govt again throwing trade into the labo(u)r camp; the opposition could not sustain claims of export weakness in the light of their support of unfair dismissal laws.
Unfair dismissal laws = tariff on labour.
