FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF "YEAH, RIGHT"

We've become used to cartoonists portraying George W. Bush as moronic or ape-like. The Village Voice's Ward Sutton takes on a far greater challenge: he seeks to convince us that John Kerry is a charismatic wonderbeing.

Wow! Did Kerry visit Michael Jackson's plastic surgeon, and have his face remade? It sure turned out a lot better than Michael's did!

Ward Sutton "misunderestimates" his skill as an artist.

I didn't know that the race was between Jay Leno and some bizarre descendant of Mickey Mouse.

I do like the "'Nuance'? What is that, French?!?" line however.

Ward Sutton’s cartoon is a scra-REAMING example of the simplistic “black & white” attitude which it claims to abhor.

My God. Bush looks like some sort of rodent, or something! And Kerry.... well, he looks so..... intelligent, wise, knowing.....

I guess I've got to change my vote now. Ker-ry! Ker-ry! Ker-ry!

How could I have been so misguided? Thanks, Ward Sutton! Whew!

Gotta love the halo around St. John in the penultimate panel.

Begs the obvious question... if Dubya really is stupid, then how stupid are the people he defeats?

Posted by: wilbur at September 4, 2004 at 05:12 PM

Or, wilbur, the ones he talks into voting for war?

Posted by: Sean M. at September 4, 2004 at 05:33 PM

To Sutton and his ilk.

You all are a gang of "against us, doomed to hell, un-patriotic, anti-American, freedom hating, biased, extremist, suspicious, terrorist supporting neo-communists."

btw, thanks for the material.

Or, wilbur, the ones he talks into voting for war?

Why they are the most precious of all...

*sob*

So if "Stupid" beats you election after election, what does that make you? Stupid-squared?

Posted by: David Crawford at September 4, 2004 at 08:02 PM

"Or, wilbur, the ones he talks into voting for war?"

Oh to be as smart as a frenchman with shares in french oil.

Posted by: Wilbur at September 4, 2004 at 10:10 PM

Wilbur, are you comparing me to a Frenchman? If so, I'll paraphrase Ken Layne and Matt Welch's favorite bogeyman, Zell Miller, and state that I wish we lived in a time when they permitted duels to the death!

(In other words, I was agreeing with you on your original post.)

But if you're calling me a Frenchman--well, then, pistols at dawn!

One moment:

Ward "Gray Matter Matters" Sutton?

It's not quite Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield, is it? Gray Matter Matters! How lame can you get?

If it matters all that much, I would submit Ward Sutton is in real trouble.

Did Kerry file the campaign contributions he has clearly received from Mr Sutton with the IRS?

What a joke.

Guess there are some people who take comfort in believing that Bush, and those who support Bush, are like the caricature in 'Black and White'. Hopefully such cartoons will comfort them during the next four years of Bush's presidency. They can believe how superior they are to Bush and his supporters.

Quentin, I choked on my bagel reading your post!

Sutton 7.5 6.0 6.5 5.5 7.0
(High and low scores tossed.)

Looks like Ted Rall retains the 'World's Worst Cartoonist' title. Sutton was doing well until the last two panels, but the judges had to mark him down on technical faults at the end of the routine.

That cartoon is so wrong, on so many levels. It boggles the mind, really. To imagine that someone actually spent a good amount of time not only coming up with such dreck but actually drawing it semi-meticulously. Amazing.

Posted by: Sam at September 5, 2004 at 07:35 PM

Sam, I'm not sure "semi-meticulously" applies to that cartoon. I think Sutton airbrushed out a lot of smudge marks where his spittle hit the paper.
