KISSING DAY

When Sheila O'Malley lists her top five kisses -- in ascending order of greatness, with parental advisory warning -- you know you’ve got to read.

To offset the affection, Sheila also links to Andrea Harris's announcement of her most-hated online phrase: "hat tip".

UPDATE. Dawn Eden lists her five best food experiences with men -- including "eel hand rolls with Vince Miller, fall 1997".

Lets Google bomb "Andrea Harris hat tip".

Who introduced "hat tip"? My impression is that Charles Johnson used it first, that I recall. Is he the originator or someone else?

And, regarding "Ith" in Andrea's comments -- anyone using the work "blogulary" isn't in a position to cast stones.

How about replacing the awful "hat tip" with the more fitting "hand job"? As in, "Hand job to Bloggy Joe for the link."

Also, Tim, your government has finally done something great. Behold, the interactive map of Australian public toilets.

I'm already planning a tour of each & every one of Alice Springs' fantastic 11 public toilets!

The most irritating thing about hat tips is when people whinge in the comments section about not getting one even though they sent that link to the blogger, like, two weeks ago, man!

"Hat tip" goes way back. There was a cartoon strip in the 30s (and later) called "They'll Do It Everytime," and the cartoonist - Jimmy Hatlo - would thank readers for their contributions with a picture of himself doffing his hat. "A Tip of the Hatlo Hat to Winnie Grossenshorts of Costive, Idaho!"

Now that no one wears hats, it looks rather odd, like "Spats nod."

I told Andrea at her blog that she deserved to take a breather but now I miss her.

Too fucking true. I hate hat tip. And 'sphere.

Posted by: Tony.T at July 7, 2004 at 01:01 PM

But I think I like "spats nod."

I like "hat tip", myself. My most hated phrases are "I'll go ahead and. . ." and "I do apologize." And "to the next level" in a context outside of video/role playing games. And the word "utilize".

Don't miss Big Dan's story in comments to Sheila's best-five-kisses post.

Can't stand the word "sorry" myself. Never use it.

Sheesh, Lileks only has to stick his nose in and people suddenly start telling us what they hate. That thread is over, people!

I like "hat tip" just fine. It's short and everyone knows what it means in the context of a weblog entry -- though "via John Smith" is just as good.

Well, "Teenage Diplomat" has mold growing on it so you're not exactly one to tell us what's "over."

Posted by: Andrea Harris at July 7, 2004 at 08:35 PM

Holy mackerel.

You idiotarians!
