NEWS BRIEFLETS

• Jailed for terrorism, Jack Roche could be free by May 2007.

• Irshad Manji is one brave lady.

• Readers outside Australia may be surprised to learn that Iraq prison abuses are still front-page news here -- because of a dispute over exactly when the Australian military learned of prisoner abuse. Blogger Reckers offers his opinion.

• Polly Toynbee’s puzzling obesity theory -- "It is inequality and disrespect that makes people fat" -- yesterday won republication in the SMH ... proof that nobody at the SMH reads Scott Burgess.

• Speaking of Scott, he’s applying for a journalistic training programme at The Guardian: "Candidates must be fluent in English and at least one other language, including but not limited to foreign languages, computer languages, English dialects or the vocabulary of music, art or science."

• Imagine life under Mark Latham. A lefty supplies John Howard’s perfect re-election platform.

• In the two months since it was launched, Air America has lost all its founding senior executives except for President Joe Sinton.

• Ralph Nader is doing even better than he was at this point in 2000, writes Matthew Continetti.

Is Strine a dialect of Pommy English?

With regards to Jack Roche, I am quite perturbed that the controversy is not over the fact that ASIO did nothing to follow up after this man approached them, obviously he was feeling remorse over his actions, he said he was scared of JL/AQ, he seems to be truthful there.

How many other Jack Roches have approached ASIO that were not followed up?????????????????? That worries me more!

"I am quite perturbed that the controversy is not over the fact that ASIO did nothing to follow up after this man approached them, obviously he was feeling remorse over his actions, he said he was scared of JL/AQ"

the nightly transcripts of Roche's evidence in court have been absolutely compelling listening - a step by step description of how a person gets sucked into that creepy shit, then finds his way out again, and tells all.

the fact that he has given information that has led to key creeps being caught would seem to have mitigated in his sentencing, but notwithstanding that, i found four and a half years for plotting to blow up an embassy a tad light!

as for wondering about how many others have called and been ignored, PLEASE don't put us through another Howard "based on the information I have been given" exercise again...let's just hope!

First a person alleged of a shooting crime was given bail and turns up in Lebanon.

Then we hear that a terrorist planner could be out in 3 years (partially due to time served).

Now a person alleged to have written a how-to and why of terrorism (and he is a former Qantas baggage handler), has been given bail.

I wonder where the sympathies of the judiciary lie.

"...when the Australian military learned of prisoner abuse."

Don't de-guild the lily, bloghead. It's the goverment that's being grilled. And the issue is, if Australia as a memebr of the vaunted Coalition knew about the abuse (or torture lite) and did nothing about it then thye are just as culpulable as the creeps who let it happen under their watch.

So don't be surprised.

Irshad Manji ought to be given a bigger forum. The whole world needs to hear what she has to say (because a lot of what she says applies to more than just Islam). Is it possible to persuade her to be a blogger?

Consider proceedings against the guilty began in January, I'm just wondering what Miranda thought the Australian government should have done?

Jump up and down?
Say, "You damn well should be trying 'em, you bastards!"
Give Miranda Divide a good fucking?

Who knows.
