TEST YOUR GOOGLE SKILLS!

It’s an old-fashioned Google hunt! Your quest: To locate people who before the war argued that regime change was an issue only for the Iraqi people -- and who now argue that Saddam’s trial should not be held in Iraq.

The first reader to supply examples of three different people expressing both opinions (Australian Greens senator Bob Brown might be the place to start) will win an authentic Australian spider preserved in genuine Southern Hemisphere plastic. For your own home spider hole!

Duke it out in comments. To recap: you’re searching for three people who wanted to leave it all up to the Iraqis before the war, but who now think Iraqis shouldn’t run Saddam’s trial. The contest will continue until we have a winner, or until the spider wrenches free of its transparent encasement and runs away.

• Placegetters may receive free hair and mouth examinations. If they’re cute.

UPDATE. As noted in comments, and via email, the SMH is running a far more challenging contest. They ask that you provide a caption for this:

My entry: "Hi, everybody. I’m Michael Dukakis, Democrat candidate for President, 1988. What the hell am I doing in this cartoon? I belong in a tank."

Some useful resources there for the wily spider-hunter!

Posted by: tim at December 18, 2003 at 03:32 AM

OK got some:

Albert Gore (here and then here)
Dennis Kucinich (here and then here)
Thankfully Dean has been on every conceivable side of this issue so he is a no brainer.

pick a position any position will do.

Posted by: Mahatma at December 18, 2003 at 05:30 AM

Dennis Kucinich here: http://www.house.gov/kucinich/info/iraq_update.htm

and then here:
http://www.house.gov/apps/list/press/oh10_kucinich/031214husseincapture.html

For Al Gore flip flops:
One site fits all! http://www.insultsunpunished.com/archives/003834.php

For Dean:

There is this:
http://www.talkleft.com/archives/004121.html

and another one stop shop:
http://wafflepoweredhoward.com/

I'm sure that better examples can be found that are more on point but I like the waffle site for pure imagery.

Please give the spider to someone else...

Hey, here's another contest, run by the SMH: make up a caption for an anti-American cartoon, drawn by "Rocco", the SMH cartoonist.

My entry:

"Rocco is a fuckwit"

Posted by: George at December 18, 2003 at 07:46 AM

I suppose Coffee, ah, Kaffee Annan doesn't count becuase too obvious.

Posted by: d at December 18, 2003 at 08:20 AM

Rocco the juvenile rodent's: `A tribute to Saddam botty lickers'; at the AGE, ABC, Greens, ALP, SMH, AGE et al.Subtitled: `maintaining the rage against the U.S., Bush, and western civilisation'.

Posted by: d at December 18, 2003 at 08:24 AM

I'm glad the SMH stated that that is supposed to be President Bush because I would've never known. Jeez, that Rocco's gotta be the worst editorial cartoonist on the planet. You should be able to easily recognize the subject in your cartoon.

"Can't Draw, Can't Write, Can't Think."

Posted by: Craig Mc at December 18, 2003 at 09:17 AM

Geez, you're right, David. I think ol' Rocco just drew a John Howard caricature, and gave it some brown hair.

The other day there was a cartoon of Bush in the local paper, which was a pretty good likeness overall, but it had these huuuuuge ears. And they weren't Dumbo flappy ears, as you might argue Bush has, but big rabbit ears. No one has ears like that.

Posted by: Angie Schultz at December 18, 2003 at 09:21 AM

Ok, How's this then?

"Rocco is a Sack of Excrement, so he fit's in quite well with the rest of you, Sadam Loving, Bottom Feeding, Scum Sucking Poor Excuses for Journalistic Intelligencia, that collectively calls itself a Newspaper.

I wouldn't fill the bottom of the Bird Cage with your rag, as it's not worth shitting on."

Posted by: ilibcc at December 18, 2003 at 09:48 AM

Actually, Tim's initial point, presents us with some of the wonders of the leftist world:

America= bad for taking decision making out of the hands of Iraqi's
But,
America = bad for letting Iraqi's make their own decisions about Sadddam.
But,
America= bad for keeping foreign criminals on american soil without trial.
But,
America= bad for not sending saddam to a foreign country for trial.

I'm not an American, though you have to wonder that ANYTHING they do gets an immediate counter argument from the left that what they are doing is wrong.

Posted by: nic at December 18, 2003 at 09:50 AM

My Caption: Cartoonist Rocco displays all the drawing skills of an armless archery contestant.

Posted by: Macca at December 18, 2003 at 09:53 AM

Is it my imagination, or has Rocco given Dubya an evil Zionist nose?

Posted by: superboot at December 18, 2003 at 11:53 AM

I never would have known it was Bush either.

My caption:

An art class example of how NOT to draw

nic:

I'm an American and I'm just resigned to the fact the leftists will hate us for everything. I say "screw 'em", let's act like the bastards they think we are and TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!

I wonder what they'd say then? They're hyperventilating as it is. I imagine they'd all have heart attacks if we really started acting like Nazi Germany.

Posted by: Chris Josephson at December 18, 2003 at 11:56 AM

I'm a leftie and I'm just resigned to the fact the righties will hate us for everything. I say "screw 'em", let's act like the bastards they think we are and EXTERMINATE THE DISSIDENTS!!

Posted by: Joe at December 18, 2003 at 12:18 PM

I just sent them the addresses of all the Iraqi bloggers and suggested that the SMH send them a request for a caption. Somehow I dont think that they will like what suggestions they receive from people who actually live there. Cant let reality intrude on their little world now can we.

Posted by: Rob at December 18, 2003 at 12:26 PM

Caption:-
Apparently I'm supposed to be George W. Bush, mired in the oil of Iraq. Why, then, do i look like Francois Mitterand in a bad toupee', wiping my arse with the American flag and preparing to take part in some Turkish wrestling?"

Posted by: Habib at December 18, 2003 at 12:43 PM

I honestly thought it was Howard Dean at first glance.

My entry:

Rocco's mama didn't know who his daddy was, so she didn't give him a last name.

I know that was a little long, but it's catchy!

Posted by: Kelly at December 18, 2003 at 02:09 PM

Pssst! Joe! Buddy! I think you ought to know---you are the dissidents.

Joe, how consistent: it was lefties as in the Nazi regime and the commie regimes which have done so much to eliminate so many people. And Joe, surprise, surprise, the former Baath regime was lefty regime.

Yes, Joe,history is replete with evidence attesting lefties are bastards, real bastards.

Posted by: d at December 18, 2003 at 04:35 PM

it was lefties as in the Nazi regime

It's an interesting theory to be sure, but I doubt many people would buy into Hitler being a tractor lovin', five year plan makin', vodka swillin' pinko.

Yes, Joe,history is replete with evidence attesting lefties are bastards, real bastards

Not all of them, though! Some of us appreciate the finer things in life. Like perfectly shaped waves, fine women and utes. Or maybe it's perfectly shaped women, waves, and utes. Or perfectly shaped utes.

Posted by: Joe at December 18, 2003 at 05:45 PM

The only substantial difference between socialism and national socialism is that one word, national. Naziism was based around extreme nationalism, while one of socialism's goals is the elimination of national borders. Other than that, they're essentially the same in terms of the principles they espouse for government.

I betcha one of those self-righteous fucktards on The Panel would be flip flopping right now if they were on air.

Wasn't Rocco one of the guys in the infamous "Raggot the Gerbil" incident ?

Posted by: Osamas Psychotic Proctologist at December 18, 2003 at 08:34 PM

The Nazis were keen on eliminating national borders too.

Anyway, Joe, us righties don't think you lefties are bastards, for the most part. We think you are idiots. We don't hate you exactly, it's just that your constant whining makes our teeth hurt.

Maybe, but it might also be receding gums - get to a dentist ASAP. Also, you mis-spelled "wining". Speaking of which, it's almost lunchtime, hence time to crack open that totally bourgeois bottle of Wolf Blass that's sitting on my desk. Have a good one, all.
