HAVE YOU DRIVEN A HOWARD LATELY?

Mark Sawyer in today’s SMH:

A lot of us are better off. Our houses are bigger, our cars newer and roomier. Our interest rates are lower, and that's not to be sniffed at.

And yet it hurts to see the way John Howard has changed this country.

Leaving aside the standard SMH attitude ... how does Sawyer imagine Howard to be capable of influencing the interior dimensions of motor vehicles?

I haven't read the article because I can't be fucked but I imagine he means that because we have grown richer under Howard we can afford bigger cars with more room. So it's not that he's influencing the cars, but he's influencing our incomes and therefore our choice in cars.

Maybe people traded their larger Holdens for more expensive (but smaller) BMWs ...

I was pondering if someone hadn't severed off S.A. and attached it to antartica. It hasn't happened, unfortunately.Perhaps it was the AFL g.f. but no, it's still booked in at the M.C.G.
A sacred cow was slaughtered? No, I looked at the morning news and, unhappily, all are still feeding their fat faces and spewing out methane.
One discounts communistos have spat their dummies, mainly because one has read sufficient today for several apopleptic fits, including Sawyer's whining woe is me snot snivelling tirade.

I read sawyers article and what a lotta crocka!

In short if we only had given the Verbal Vomit more time as he (and Bonkin' Bob and Pantless Fraser) had done all the hard yards and that bloody opportunist red necked hatemonger Howard got elected.
So real Australians (eg Adams, Kingston, Sawyer, Manne et al) are just being ignored and made feel unwanted.
And what's more we don't have a bloody interfering maudlin twirp as GG.
The Country has gone to the dogs BUT...

WE ARE ALL BETTER OFF!

Leunig left logic on display.

And apart from education, the aqueducts, roads and law and order, what have the Romans done for us????

I can't stand this sort of argument... "I will present empirical evidence of how good Howard is - economy, standard of living, and unemployment levels. But I will attempt to somehow negate that by saying that Howard is actually bad because... well, he does nasty things... like.. um, things that hurt. Things that hurt our image. And other vague things that I can't identify but are touchy-feely and thus outweight the concrete examples of why he is good." Wankers.

So a Commodore is roomier than a VH Valiant Ranger? I would like to see you get a whole rugby league team in a Commodore.

I read the article, and I just can't get past the idea that Hawke was "presidential". I know it is beside the point, but really? Seriously? Hawke was about as presidential as Dame Edna.

"He had a lot of help in the preparation from Bob Hawke and Paul Keating, who did the hard yards in the economic area and into the bargain neatly detached Labor from its battler roots."

Hard Yards ? Buggering up the Aussie economy must've been a lot harder than PK made it look.....

Journalists and writers must wonder why no one respect them much. I am not too surprised considering drivel such as this. Thanks heavens that the next set of journalism majors will have to pay for their degrees in earnest rather than cruising through in the Uni bar....

"yet it hurts to see the way John Howard has changed this country"

Let's see ... If I vote for Howard, not only do I know that the economy and foreign & defence policy are in good hands but I also cause more "hurt" for pathetic whining lefties like Mark Sawyer.

Gee, I'd like to save Medicare but ...

probably because whilst in his car he gives everyone the poops, so they vacate, therefore more room in the car.

Reading the article really made me wish I had done something about setting up a blog-site of my own as it is perfect for a maiden fisking. Then he goes and spoils it all by fisking himself;
"This history is there for any journalist not obsessed with the day-to-day fluff."

Posted by: Michael Gill at July 10, 2003 at 02:17 PM

Why does Sawyer say "poignant moment for many who were once called lefties"? What are they called now? Dingbats would be good, but I don't recall hearing it on the ABC, so I guess that's not standard terminology yet.

I love the comparison with good old Gareth who once suggested we apply to join ASEAN. Here's news for you Mark (some journalist), Mahatir would black-ball us for that and already has on some other things. At least W is happy to have us over for a barbie.

If Sawyer were a woman, you'd have to say this article is strong evidence of terminal menopause. As he's not, he's obviously suffering ED or Howard penis envy or something.

Posted by: Rob at July 10, 2003 at 03:23 PM

Perhaps Sawyer is a woman but had a sex change op. and didn't tell anyone: if so,no wonder he's a shrieker, and suffers penis envy..

Posted by: d at July 10, 2003 at 05:08 PM

Actually, I think it was the policy of the former labor government to make cars smaller. This was basically their policy on safe sex.

So naturally, since the election of the liberal government, the cars have gotten bigger.

Also, one must not forget that it is the policy of the SMH to criticise the liberal government.

Posted by: Jonny at July 11, 2003 at 06:16 AM

Yes, Johnny, but we still need to explain penis lopping, in Sawyer's case.
