DISSENT SILENCED
Popular and combative lefty blogger Chris Sheil has up and quit. He'll likely return mid-2005 after finishing his latest book. In the interim, you’re always welcome in the comments here, Chris.

Tim, when you're sitting there typing these little security code numbers in, could you please bold them. They're a little hard to read way over here in Texas.
Posted by: Wallace-Midland, Texas at November 18, 2004 at 02:57 PMany guesses on the title of his book? what about.. "the meaning of the word 'and', 'is' and 'are' in the context of a statement that i never really said NYA NYA!" or "parsing the buck-my life as a word-weasel". or maybe he'll write something exciting about manning clarke or gough fwitlam? that'd be so rad...
Posted by: rosceo at November 18, 2004 at 02:57 PMAll thats left is for him to fulfill his post election "threat" to move to New Zealand.
Posted by: Troy at November 18, 2004 at 03:03 PMIt must be frustrating being a lefty. The only hope for Labor or the Democrats (US) is to move further to the right and rationality. Stuck out in left field are a clutch of academics going nowhere, pundits who've learnt nothing in 30 years and a flock of undereducated kids, most of whom will eventually adhere to the GB Shaw maxim of socialists at 40 having no brains.

Margo takes a month off after Latham's defeat by John Howard.
What is it with left wing bloggers?
Do they lack stamina or belief?
Or are they just disabled by excessive drug use?
Roscoe,
I won't guess at the title of his magnum opus, but I'm guessing it has a colon in it.
The colon is a crucial weapon in the modern academic's armoury!

Posted by: rog at November 18, 2004 at 03:29 PMMy wife always wanted to write her dissertation in a way the the title could start, "The Colon: . . ."

Don't underestimate the power of sneer quotes
Maybe Niall Cook will have to sell his computer to pay for his utilities.

The Colon: Long Way Down to Daylight?
The Colon: Submarining Down the Alimentary Canal with Gun and Camera? (apologies to Robert Benchley)
Or the action film version:
The Colon: Gut Check
Posted by: richard mcenroe at November 18, 2004 at 04:08 PMFrom Chris Sheil's rules of blogging:
"Rule 1: Edit your posts thoroughly and severely.
Rule 2: Go back and read rule 1 again. You call that an edit? You have yet begun to edit."
"You have yet begun to edit"??
Chris, you have yet begun to edit...not. Go back and read rule 2.
Posted by: cuckoo at November 18, 2004 at 05:44 PMThe title should be either:
My life as a pantywaist or
denial, its part in my downfall.
Posted by: nic at November 18, 2004 at 06:31 PMhey sheils! you better write that book quick- sticks before nazi Howard cuts your 'australia council' funding!
Posted by: rosceo at November 18, 2004 at 07:03 PMI'm pleasantly surprised to see 15 commenters here that know who Chris is. I'm sure he'll be chuffed.
Posted by: Swade at November 18, 2004 at 07:22 PMI think Chris Shiels was having more than a bit of a sly dig with his long winded Steps of Blogging; did you fall for it?
Posted by: rog at November 18, 2004 at 08:01 PMWallace-Midland: the numbers are images, not typed-in characters. They are supposed to be hard to see as a spam-bot preventative. The only thing I am able to do is to change the colors, but from what I have seen of this script used on other sites that won't make the images easier to see. I have no way of bolding them or changing the font. I can't replace the images either: they are controlled by a server-side program that I have no control over. The only thing I can suggest is changing your monitor settings.

There's actually a sub-discipline around the use of colons in titles - it's called "titular colonicity". I know nobody will believe this, so here's a Google link.
