OZHAMMER

Many readers have forwarded this excellent Charles Krauthammer column. Krauthammer has an advantage over most US pundits when discussing Australian issues; he's married to an Australian.

I met Krauthammer, briefly, at the Republican convention. Charming fellow, as you'd expect. He was amused to learn that Phillip Adams still has a job.

I would love to leave a comment since I think your blog is wonderful, but I just don't know who Philip Adams is! I made the mistake of clicking on the link. Is he the vile reporter who said those anti-semetic vulgarities? Shame on him. May he step in something the dog left behind! And I don't mean his bone! May His Peace be with you always.

I can't believe that nobody is making a bigger deal out of Diana Kerry's attempt to influence the Australian election and drive a wedge between allies in the WOT.

Is the entire Kerry family traitors?

Posted by: Arty at September 28, 2004 at 01:23 AM

Yes, the entire Kerry Klan are traitors. Next question.

Posted by: Doc at September 28, 2004 at 01:26 AM

First question. Who is trying to shut down Mark Steyn??

I am also a charming fellow. Australian-Canadian currently working in Vietnam and absolutely ASTONISHED that smug, sanctimonious, self-satisfied shithead, Philip Adams still has a job.

Whenever I wonder why I left Oz, I remember Phil and I remember.

The fact that Phillip Adams still has a job proves that Rupert Murdoch has a sense of humour.

Hell, does anyone really care what Phil thinks? Even my lefty friends think the man's a pompous windbag with an obsessive hatred of Howard.

Krauthammer roughly transated into English means cabbage-basher. In that context I agree, his work is indeed 'excellent'. But as the man in the helmet used to say on the Rowan & Martin Laugh-in - but stupid!

Posted by: tug at September 28, 2004 at 07:59 AM

Tug,
I don't get your post. Is it that Dr. Krathammer's postings are above your level of comprehension? How can they be excellent and stupid? And what does translating his name into English have to do with anything? Your name translates into a utility harbor boat.
By the way, the man in the helmet on the old (1960's) series Laugh-In was Arte Johnson and he wore a uniform to look like a World War II German. Are you saying you agree with Nazi's? (in context of course).

Personal attacks against people with whom you disagree is the sign of a small mind. Your village called, their idiot is missing. Phone home. Stated for the common good.

Even in the USA, where Krauthammer shows often on the TV discussion panels and in his syndicated columns, nearly no one knows he's a paraplegic. It just about never comes up. Didn't know it took him 3 years to be able to begin to write again. He's 1st generation Polish/Jewish (via Germany) American. Heard he was an M.D. but didn't realize his med. school problems. He's probably doing more 'healing'- as he is now. Gutsy guy, penetrating intellectual.

It seems to have dropped out of the news but there is another J.I cell armed and ready to attack in Indonesia now. With that in mind it makes Kerry his sister,Latham and Adams more disgusting.

Nice to be appreciated. However, I'm not sure what he meant by "Of all our allies in the world, which is the only one to have joined the United States in the foxhole in every war in the last 100 years? Not Britain, not Canada, certainly not France. The answer is Australia." I remember one of the useless younger Murdochs running this line during the republic campaign (I sent a letter to the Australian saying as an American citizen he should mind his own business - funnily enough it was never printed).
We joined in one more war than the poms - Vietnam. But it's simply not true that we joined in every American war and they certainly haven't fought in every campaign we've been involved in. For instance Malaysia and Indonesia (us but not them) and all of the various central American campaigns on the 1920s and 1903s plus Grenada. Not sure whether they were in Russia or not in 1919-1920.

CAC,

If the Olympics are war by peaceful means (one of the original ideals behind the Games) then the US and Australian swimmers have combined to kick the Rest of the World's ass!

Posted by: JDB at September 28, 2004 at 05:09 PM

Not sure whether they were in Russia or not in 1919-1920.

If you mean the civil war between the White and Red Russians, yes the US provided backing there.

As a side note - Krauthammer is married to an Australian? Gee, it's not the Neo-conservative puppeteers is it, it's damned Aussie infilitrators in the US...

;)

Yojimbo

Did you intend to confess to being small minded, or was that an accident? Either way, well done son.

Posted by: Sinbad at September 28, 2004 at 06:14 PM

in australia 'krauthammer' translates as 'german-whacker'.

Posted by: rosceo at September 28, 2004 at 07:33 PM

bc doesn't get it.

Well as a cabbage basher Krauthammer is 'excellent'. As a thinker he is more, well 'stupid'. Just an opinion. His work is the usual get-a-rise-out-of-liberals shtick. There's a lot of it about. Much of it desparate, a lot of it nasty

as to making fun of people's names. It's cheap I know but it sometimes helps put those tough-minded, no nonsense, tough nut columnists in their place. So, I am happy to be a harbour accessory. Haul em into line, push em into place, nudge em out of the way,

I think Arte was less a Nazi than a good soldier Schweyk. The thing is he always said the same thing. He was predictable. rather like the cabbage basher.

Posted by: tug at September 28, 2004 at 08:13 PM

bc isn't the only
Is there a fable or connecting story so cabbage bashing has some relevence apart from his name translating to it according to you?

Posted by: gubbaboy at September 28, 2004 at 08:55 PM

As documented elsewhere Mr K. is an ill-informed right wing (is there any other kind?) Seppo talking through his arse.

For the intellectually challenged here, you may have to scroll down a bit to the section headed "Flavour of the month, politically speaking"

Posted by: Albatross2147 at September 28, 2004 at 09:48 PM

"Yes, the entire Kerry Klan are traitors."

And I suppose Prescott's well documented (ie. actually documented as opposed to lunatic ravings) dealings with Nazi Germany and the later dealings of his sons with various enemy aliens doesn't qualify as treachery.

Posted by: Albatross2147 at September 28, 2004 at 09:52 PM

Umm... "kohl" is the German word for "cabbage". Having studied German for years I always had a little laugh when Helmut Kohl was referred to on radio or TV.

A politician who is Mr Cabbage must be one tough cookie.

Jeez an I the only one who can be bothered posting here?

Posted by: Albatross2147 at September 28, 2004 at 09:56 PM

CAC:
US troops were in the Russian far east and at Archangel. The ones in the north were a Detroit regiment and were known as the Polar Bears. Their monument is in White Chapel Cemetary, in Troy, Michigan.

Thanks to all the well informed posters - the Russian campaign understandably gets dwarfed by the Great War. Good to know that we were together in that one as well. As a gratuitous aside, I suspect if you had a choice, that would have been a better one to win than the Great War itself as you would simulataneously have averted communism and hitlerism, albeit at the cost of the European continent being under a militaristic authoritarian regime, but still better than the two totalitarian alternatives.

I was responding to the "Tug" post two posts up from mine. If it turns out to be a quid pro quo situation, so be it. I'm certainly glad you agree that personal attacks are small minded. Mr. Krauthamer has a large body of work to go after but that's never done. Instead, he's the typical right wing fanatic loose on the world. I'm just not sure how his name, in any language, relates to the merit,or lack thereof, regarding conservative principles or arguments. So I'm just excited as heck that you are joining me in encouraging the "tugs" of the world to deal with specifics. And yes, in and of itself, that was a general attack. Happy.

Well okay, more childish trolling here so we'll just be closing this post as well.
