THE SOCKS FILES

Did Sandy Berger stuff socks? Fox News says yes:

Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed the handwritten notes by placing them in his jacket, pants and socks.

But ex-White House flack Lanny Davis says no:

"I suggest that person is lying," he said. "And if that person has the guts, let's see who it is who made the comment that Sandy Berger stuffed something into socks."

Only Socks himself knows for sure.

A third-rate catburglary.

Who would have known that those socks and jocks he received last christmas would represent such a threat to national security?

Is that a dossier in your pants or are you just pleased to see me?

Law enforcement sources said archive staff members told FBI agents they saw Berger placing items in his jacket and pants, and one archive staffer told agents that Berger also placed something in his socks.

I think skepticism is called for here. Anonymous cops say that an anonymous archive staffer told anonymous FBI agents about a sock. Hearsay, or unsubstantiated rumour, take yer pick.

That's absolutely right, Jethro. We have no reason to accept these hearsay reports about Berger taking stuff out in his socks when he's only admitted to ....er... inadvertantly smuggling classified documents out in his pockets. But only inadvertantly.

Exactly. Straw man time.

Doesn't matter HOW he did it. The point is he did it. Inadvertently my ass.

But don't you think Clinton will be relieved - a story about nefarious activity in the White House involving undergarments, and for a change it has nothing to do with him.

I know some are calling the socks issue a straw man & a red herring but it’s amusing & captures the public’s attention & has indelibly impressed upon the public consciousness the image of Sandy Berger taking the secret documents. It’s not a red herring but a mnemonic & nobody will forget that, socks or no, Berger took what he wasn’t supposed to. Insofar as some connected with Berger are disputing the socks, it’s only fair to mention it as an ongoing disputed question rather than as a solid fact.

Maybe he was stuffing socks into his pants, and it just got a little garbled.

I didn't know Sandy Berger was a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan.

Stuffing socks -- hee hee.

That was a Dr. Seuss book, wasn't it? Dox in Sox?

If any one of us stole highly classified documents we'd spend 30 years in the crowbar hotel playing cribbage with Aldrich Ames!

I know it's going to happen, but I wonder how the heck are the paleo-Clintonites going to get the media to promote his innocense, nay BRAVE patriotic DUTY to steal classified documents...

Posted by: Joe at July 22, 2004 at 01:01 AM

Funny how anonymous sources are suspect when talking about Sandy Berger's admitted crime, but they're fine when 'White House sources', 'administration officials/employess', and all manner of un-named individuals are asserting that Bush is the source of all evil in the known universe.

Amen to that! Like my dear Major Dad said last night: "He's stuffing things in his pants and Clinton's laughing, but the poor Lance Corporal who misplaces a classifed paper clip would wind up in Leavenworth."

Sad thing is, I doubt this makes any impression on the public at large. The only way it would get the attention and outrage it deserves is if it had been Rummy with loaded drawers. A Democrat will just be tut-tutted as a sloppy, absent minded intellectual.

I thought Socks was dead...no, wait, that was Buddy who got run over by a hit man. Nevermind.

Socks & Sandy, Toonces & Teddy...ah those dim-o-cats, always getting in over their heads.

Posted by: ForNow at July 22, 2004 at 05:44 AM

Jack, I know of one unnamed source who has said Sandy Berger took classified documents. SANDY BERGER!

Posted by: Sortelli at July 22, 2004 at 03:21 PM

Whoops! I named the source. Now the credibility is gone!

Posted by: Sortelli at July 22, 2004 at 03:21 PM

Sortelli, perhaps Sandy Berger undermined his own credibility, eh?
