RAMSEY RECALLS

The Sydney Morning Herald’s Alan Ramsey, another Vietnam-fixated correspondent whose quagmired views should disqualify him from covering more recent conflicts, wrote a couple of days ago about Reverend Brigadier (ret) Gerald Anthony Cudmore, who died last week. Cudmore held masses for troops in Vietnam, among his other religious duties.

Ramsey gives the impression -- supported by quotes Cudmore is obviously unable to confirm -- that Cudmore would have opposed the current war. Professor Bunyip presents evidence to the contrary, and asks:

If any reader attended the debate at St. John's and can provide a summary of Cudmore's speech and arguments, please drop the Billabong a line.

Read the Prof's post for details of this speech.

Journalists of his age group are desperate for Iraq to turn into another Vietnam. It either gives them the chance to reminisce and re-live the best years of their lives, or it gives them the chance to seize the spotlight and make a name for themselves in the world of journalism, and to hell with the consequences!
In the leed up to every war since the 1st Gulf War, the ABC has used the Vietnam analogy every time, even before the bloody thing starts they drag out the Vietnam comparisons. Wishful thinking I guess.

Same thing in the US. There is a fixation with Vietnam that won't die. I think it's partly to do with the whole "60's mystique". People who lived it want to relive it, those who didn't want a chance to recreate it.

The 1960's have become, in many ways, some mythical golden age. People all joined together against 'the man' with sex and drugs thrown into the mix. The defeat of a bad war by 'the people' coming together. Heady stuff.

I lived through the 1960's. Protested the war. Have a hard time dealing with people who seem to be stuck in a time warp. The 1960's were 40 years ago. Let's move on.

I don't hate the 1960's. I liked the 60's. Enjoyed myself. But, I've grown up and have gone onto other things. I wish the 'Vietnam Worshippers' would also.

Of course, it doesn't help the US move on when we keep getting dragged back to Vietnam via Kerry. His heroic service and his medals that he may or may not have thrown.
