SHAMELESS BOB

Can we trust Robert Fisk's reporting of complex events in the Middle East? Even his most devoted supporters might question Fisk's reliability after reading this:

Last Sunday, I was invited to talk on Irish television's TV3 lunchtime programme on Iraq and President Bush's support for Sharon's new wall on the West Bank. Towards the end of the programme, Tom Cooney, a law lecturer at University College, Dublin, suddenly claimed that I had called an Israeli army unit a "rabble" (absolutely correct - they are) and that I reported they had committed a massacre in Jenin in 2002.

I did not say they committed a massacre. But I should have. A subsequent investigation showed that Israeli troops had knowingly shot down innocent civilians, killed a female nurse and driven a vehicle over a paraplegic in a wheelchair. "Blood libel!" Cooney screamed.

Check the tape and you'll discover that Fisk can't even report his own television appearances accurately. Cooney never screams -- and it is Fisk, rather than Cooney, who uses the term "rabble". Fisk claims not to have accused the Israeli army of committing a massacre; he actually went further, writing that the Israeli army "has not yet finished filling the mass graves of Jenin".

Fisk lies.

Re the 'Fantastic Mikey fat fest' in Tim's News Brieflets:

Mike Moore, wide-eyed ravernous and on the fang, meets John Pilger and Robert Fisk at that same diner.

"You're absolutely right Mike - Bush should be impeached for...arrrghh!!"

"Mmm...peach."

"Mike, people will say - incorrectly in my view - that you bit Bob's cranium off.

"The Zionist cabal of big-oil potentates behind Bush-Cheney will distort this for their own advantage with the specious and poultry excuse that...arrrghh!!"

"Mmm...poultry."

Later that morning at CSI...

"Found a wrinkled old head and a huge Adam's Apple in his enormous gut. Hard to see, what with that Evinrude outboard, the 32 number plates and that Labrador puppy."

"Food poisoning, then?"

"Toxic trauma."

Hence the term "self Fisking".

It would seem we are witnessing the excruciatingly slow mental breakdown of Robert the Fisked. Whatever will we do once they've taken him away? Ah well, there's always the Pilgerer...

The IDF a "rabble"? I guess that's why they're 5-0 against all of Fisks islamofacist pals.

Posted by: Andrew at April 26, 2004 at 03:34 PM

There is a famous picture of Fisk after he was beaten in Afghanistan. Fisk was attacked after speaking Arabic to a group of Afghans. His explanation was that he was attacked because he was a Westerner. I've always thought that he was attacked because he spoke Arabic and the Afghans hated what the Arabs did to their country.

"Fisk lies."

and fish swim. it's hardly news Tim.

Posted by: Harry Tuttle at April 26, 2004 at 05:11 PM

Things must be OK.

Pilger now totally deranged,Adam's
latest column showing the onset of dementia,
Fisk losing it and Chompsky not having the
balls for comments on his blog.

Posted by: fred at April 26, 2004 at 05:21 PM

Remember that article where Fisk was fantasising about the trouble Israel was in now that it had pissed off AQ's hard men? How the poor stupid mossad was defensless against this ruthless enemy, how Sharon would rue the day? You could almost hear him panting as he worked on his pathetic little stump of a dick at the prospect of the jews being slaughtered by his heros.

But if the IDF is a rabble, what are the arab armies it crushed?

As for fisk's mental breakdown, don't kid yourselves. This piece of shit will be with us for decades, spewing his bile from the decayed remanents of maxist leftist strongholds like the Independant, who have put him behind a subscriber-only screen to protect him from the blogosphere.

Here's my advice to any big-time bloggers reading, or failing that, Tim Blair (hee hee)- Fisk can be destroyed but it's a long term project. He needs to be yanked out from behind that pay-per-view screen and exposed to the world as he used to be. Since he retired to his fortress of wankitude he's almost vanished from the blogosphere's gunsights, that's got to end.

get someone to subscribe to the independant, get his articles and post them on some server in hong kong or something. Then Fisk can once again be a fixture of ridicule, linkable once again by anybody. When legal threats close that server down, open another. As Scientology found, the internet is a hard bastard to beat in the courts, let it loose on Fisk.

'To Fisk' is a blogosphereism, but his name needs to become joke in the mainstream, a synonym for dishonesty, hysteria and journalistic sleaze.

Don't let this scumbag get away like Duranty did.

Posted by: Amos at April 26, 2004 at 05:21 PM

The difficulty, Amos,is, the very large number of sleazebags in the mainstream media so the likelyhood of what you suggest is less than 3 in a hundred chance, but, obviously greater than, o to satisfy rules of probability.

Posted by: d at April 26, 2004 at 05:32 PM

It's hard for me to imagine, but there MUST be an audience for Fisk's drivel? I mean, aside from those who view his writings as comedy.

"The mass graves of Jenin". Unfortunately there are still those who believe this. It's like Pres. Bush's "plastic turkey", it just won't die.

Note: I do not think I equate, the fairly harmless belief in 'the plastic turkey' with the insidious lie of a 'massacre' in Jenin.

It's just that no matter how many times both are shown to be false, they keep popping up as 'gospel'.

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised because these are believed by many of the same people who believe Castro's Cuba is some sort of "People's Paradise".

Amos,

Fisk's articles always become freely available after a couple of days, just like the one above, so I suggest you start a blog, fiskingfisk.blogspot.com or something, and fisk Fisk to your heart's content.

Posted by: PNN at April 26, 2004 at 05:57 PM

Goddamnit, some of us have jobs.

But even if I started up Fiskblog, it's be rapidly converted to Morfordblog, then Catblog as I went head to head with Reynolds to force myself into the blogger A-list with adorable kitten photos.

Posted by: Amos at April 26, 2004 at 06:16 PM

You'd only need to fisk one column actually, because they're always full of the same old crap. But he's best ignored anyway.

Posted by: PNN at April 26, 2004 at 06:36 PM

I'm told that when fisk was stoned in Pakistan, he bent down and picked up a stone that had missed him and started beating himself with it.
his attackers were so aghast at the cowardice of this infidel that they burst out in fits oflaughter and fisk was able to run away.

BTW How come there are so many marxist journalist nutters coming out of ireland ?

Posted by: DAVO at April 26, 2004 at 07:01 PM

You think anybody visits chompskis blog? If a blog doesn't have comments, or links to other sites, is there any way to prove that people really visit it?

Posted by: Papertiger at April 26, 2004 at 07:35 PM

Papertiger, make no mistake Chomsky is popular.

Posted by: Dead Ed at April 26, 2004 at 07:54 PM

Comrade Chompsky, Pilger, Fisk etc have the unique honour of being at the top of their fields an yet utterly ignored by the real world and its obstinate denizens.

All Disseminate their bitter screeds to legions of breathless fans and yet that demographic translates into jack shit in terms of political power. All will live to see none of their dreams realised, all will die bitter and futilely ranting against the end of history, the USSR and their murderous utopian fantasies gone to dust, their jihadi pin-up boys crushed under Isreali and American bootheels.

They say the best revenge is to live well. Personally I'd prefer to kill them and burn their houses down in solidarity with totalitarianism's victims, but hey. The west will continue to live well, Bush and his ideological decendents will rule the world, and Fisks broke-ass, blood-splattered, discredited terrorist scumbag gunmen friends will join him on the ash-heap of history.

He's already a has-been, the clapped-out old fool just dosen't realise it yet.

Posted by: Amos at April 26, 2004 at 09:46 PM

Wishful thinking, Amos. As long as there are people who prefer to project their feelings of personal and cultural inferiority on to some external target rather than change and improve themselves, there will always be a market for Fisk, Pilger, Chomsky and the Koran. It's not a small niche, particularly outside the USA.

Posted by: Clem Snide at April 26, 2004 at 10:06 PM

Sadly, Chomsky's blog doesn't have comments because of the actions of many on the right side-not because of any fear on his part.

His comments were inundated with idiocies--with the direct purpose of shutting them dowm.

Rather than take the oppurtunity to tear Chomsky apart in his own blog, some chose to take the leftist way out and shour him down--and then cry 'victory' and call him coward when he acceded reluctantly to their screaming demands.

He put up with it for almost a week before admitting that the idiots would never let comments be active or rational on his blog.

I can't stand Chomsky, and looked eagerly forward to ripping him apart daily only to have that dream destroyed by the weak of mind and argument.

Posted by: jack at April 27, 2004 at 02:12 AM

I'm still figuring out how Fisk thinks Cooney's a racist for challenging him for his accuracy on the Jenin thing.
