SPECIAL GUESTS

Franco and Golan from the Spanish site HispaLibertas will shortly be posting here, in English, on developments following the Madrid bombing. It’s an honour to host them.

The death toll in Madrid has increased to 198; Foreign Minister Ana Palacio says the attack looks increasingly like the work of ETA.

UPDATE. Via Road to Surfdom, a piece from travelling Australian musician Sophia. She quotes her Spanish friend Dani:

He was so shocked and so angry. This is war, he said. Those fucking terrorists. Fucking ETA, or Fucking Arabs. We should kill them.

For all the attitude the Europeans cop, I've got a strong feeling that the first time they get a four figure death toll from Muslim terror, they won't be responding with Ramadan stamps and heads of state visiting iftar feasts, the way the US did. All hell is going to break loose, instead.

Meanwhile, I hate to sound like Howard Dean but perhaps Spain, the UN and everyone else could wait until they have the slightest idea what actually happened before blaming either ETA or al-Qaeda?

I'll surely welcome the additional voices from Spain.

It's pretty sad that the Spanish are having to learn the hard way, that the War on Terror isn't American against the world, but the West against Jihadists.

Ten synchronised bombings suggest Osama's no has-been.

Personally, I don't see this as a particularly sophisticated attack. It required ten working bombs, and ten people able to board commuter trains.

Not that this minimizes the tragedy in any way, of course.

It's a terrible day. The thought of all those grieving families is more than I can stand. Blood lust on this scale can not be justified and must not be appeased. Some will try to do both in the days to come. Shun them. I never fly any other flag but the stars and stripes. But now I must make an exception. Spain is a force for good in this world. She does not deserve this.

Spain, you are in my heart. No one deserves this. The images of solidarity against fear and hatred that have come to us from Spain will stay with me forever. The images offer encouragement and healing to those who are willing to be encouraged. The perpetrators will be found. Cowards can only hide for so long before they seek attention. They will make themselves be seen in their sickened need for attention. And they will be brought to justice, one way or another.

Otter, that's what I've been saying. The Islamofascists don't want to piss the Europeans off cuz those boys can teach crazy to a loon once they're roused. Well, Spain is roused. The Netherlands are patting themselves on the arse. France's Colombani is pretty much saying follow us into appeasement and you won't have a problem. BTW, have you all noticed how Israel is suddenly hot stuff? You want to learn quick, fast, and in a hurry how to deal with disasters and wounds of this magnitude? Call the Israelis.
