HOOKES "TECHNICALLY DEAD"

If you followed Australian cricket in the ‘70s, you followed David Hookes. Last night Hookes was bashed outside a Melbourne bar:

A man has been charged with assault following a life-threatening attack on former Australian Test cricketer David Hookes.

Hookes is on life support in Melbourne's Alfred Hospital after the incident which left him "technically dead" on a pavement outside a hotel shortly before midnight last night.

Zdravco Micevic appeared at Melbourne Magistrate's court today and has been released on bail. He was charged with one count of assault.

TV images just shown of Hookes being delivered to hospital were terrible. Wish him well.

Fuckers.

That's all I can say.

Posted by: Marty at January 19, 2004 at 12:25 PM

The basher was released on bail after putting a guy into a coma????

Posted by: Andrea Harris at January 19, 2004 at 01:05 PM

"Assault"? More like Grievous Bodily Harm.

Posted by: Toryhere at January 19, 2004 at 01:08 PM

Gee...isn't it good to hear that the bouncer who almost killed him was released on bail only a few hours later. Crime and "punishment".

Posted by: Richard at January 19, 2004 at 01:08 PM

Any word on what his chances are of a recovery?

Posted by: VictorianGuy at January 19, 2004 at 01:13 PM

Zdravko? An other great import from Serbia, Bosnia, Kosovo or one of the other shitholes down there...

Posted by: BalkanBasher at January 19, 2004 at 01:15 PM

Seven network just mentioned that Hookes "may not survive".

Like Andrea, I can't believe that the bloke who (er, allegedly) did this is free.

Posted by: tim at January 19, 2004 at 01:37 PM

What the fuck do you have to do to not get bailed these days? I guess GBH and possible murder just don't turn the judges on any more.

Posted by: PNN Ed at January 19, 2004 at 02:24 PM

What provoked this in the first place?

Posted by: donnyc at January 19, 2004 at 02:41 PM

Whilst violence of such magnitude is always unnaceptable, Hookes in his later years (ie after his playing days) became an arrogant, annoying and racist man. As someone who listens to his sports program every night (Sports Today on 3AW with Gerard Healy), I could only think that he got what he deserved.

Posted by: Kevin at January 19, 2004 at 02:53 PM

He deserved to be beaten almost to death, Kevin? You want to get that moral compass of yours checked, pal.

Posted by: tim at January 19, 2004 at 02:56 PM

Hey, he said both "arrogant" and "annoying." That surely deserves death.

Unlike, of course, blowing up a disco.

Posted by: Mike G at January 19, 2004 at 03:16 PM

Word is on 3AW is that he's fucking dead.

I hope that scumbag bouncer rots in jail.

Posted by: VictorianGuy at January 19, 2004 at 03:28 PM

He won't.

Posted by: gaz at January 19, 2004 at 03:42 PM

Hookes has made some dumb statements but I cannot see how insulting anyone, even someone who is only paid to stand up and hurt people, whoops I mean provide security, deserved to be beaten into a coma.

I too stood here slack-jawed when I read that the thug got bail. WTF is that Magistrate on??!!

Posted by: Jake D at January 19, 2004 at 03:45 PM

Bouncers being violent criminals? I don't believe it. What is the world coming to?

Deport the fucker.

Posted by: Yobbo at January 19, 2004 at 04:26 PM

They should deport Kevin while they are at it.

Posted by: Fadzil at January 19, 2004 at 04:54 PM

"he got what he deserved"

Thanks Kevin, very nice. Now fuck off you jerk.

Posted by: matt at January 19, 2004 at 04:57 PM

Another ethnic criminal.

Posted by: Kerry Nettle at January 19, 2004 at 06:22 PM

I hope no-one mistakes Kevin for me. He needs to do big time and then sent back to the shithole he comes from. Kevin, that is, and the ethnic bastard that did Hookes should be locked in a cell with Richie Benaud for 30 years and then sent back to the shithole he comes from.

Posted by: Kev at January 19, 2004 at 06:34 PM

Kevin's mother sucks a good dick for peasant.

Dave.

Posted by: Dave. at January 19, 2004 at 06:50 PM

Latest word is that Hookes has passed away. Now they've got to go and catch the murderer again?

Posted by: Yobbo at January 19, 2004 at 06:51 PM

Yeah, he's passed away. Just saw the announcement on tv then.

Posted by: Marty at January 19, 2004 at 06:55 PM

David Hookes has been confirmed dead. Gee Kevin, I guess he got what he deserved. Why don't you send his family a card along the lines of what you wrote above.

I'm not gonna put an obit on every single Aussie blog, but I'll cut'n'pate what I just said on the After Grog Blog:

He is one of my VERY first memories of watching cricket. I saw the famous five 4s in-a-row off Tawny Greig live on TV with Dad. I was 8 at the time.

He went the tonk waaaay before it was OK to go the tonk. Hookesy almost single handedly made 80s domestic cricket exciting.

Posted by: Big Ramifications at January 19, 2004 at 07:13 PM

Hooksie has walked off the oval for the last time.
I hope you meet a 'roid-raged bouncer some time, Kev, you fucking arsehole.

Posted by: Habib at January 19, 2004 at 07:23 PM

Jesus, poor bloody Hookesy. Here's my 2 cents: Put the bouncer up against someone he can REALLY have a challenge with - like Stan "The Man" Longinidis (kickboxer for those that don't know). Or see how he goes up against Russell Marks (as long as Marks is complete with shotgun).

Bastard.

Posted by: National Party Headcase at January 19, 2004 at 07:41 PM

Not only did Hooksie give many of us the first sense of real excitement in test cricket, not only was he coaching the Victorian team to an unbelievable new level in domestic cricket, but he ran a fine radio programme on 3AW in Melbourne.

His main partner, Gerard Healy was at his bedside today, but the programme ran its 2 hours tonight. His death was announced during the show, and somehow, it continued through the announcement. Tributes were ringing in from everywhere, great stories will be told about this guy for years from now.

He had skills, he had a big bloody mouth, and the strength of his convictions. I wish there were more of him in Australia today.

Go hard Hooksie.

Posted by: chico o'farrill at January 19, 2004 at 08:08 PM

Hooksie was a great cricketer, and a good bloke.

The refuge of PC arseholes is to denounce any person they disagree with a racist. Kevin you already show symptoms of brain damage, hope you die from it soon, Arsehole.

Posted by: Blindsideflanker at January 19, 2004 at 08:12 PM

Hooksie's death is a senseless tragedy.

What will unfold in the coming months is an even greater tragedy - the Australian legal system.

Just wait till this murdering fuck gets off with just a few years for tragically cutting the life of a fabulous bloke.

P.S Kevin you're a shit.

Posted by: Don at January 19, 2004 at 08:49 PM

Does anyone know where DH went to High School?

Posted by: and at January 19, 2004 at 09:31 PM

Kevin thought he was a racist, yet he listened to his show, all two hours of it, every night. Weirdo.

Posted by: Peter Briffa at January 19, 2004 at 09:44 PM

Peter Briffa,
The show was called 'SPORTS Tonight' and Hooksie co-hosted it with Gerard Healy. Therefore, although I believe he is a racist, I still think the show was top-notch, and his racism has no bearing on that.

Posted by: Kevin at January 19, 2004 at 10:20 PM

He will always be remembered for his thoughts on cricket.

Posted by: Rezwan at January 19, 2004 at 10:41 PM

A bit too much of the present indicative there, Kevin.

Posted by: Peter Briffa at January 19, 2004 at 11:02 PM

Moreover, what you first said does not make sense. First:

"Whilst violence of such magnitude is always unnaceptable..." and then

"I could only think that he got what he deserved".

Well, which is it?

Posted by: Peter Briffa at January 19, 2004 at 11:04 PM

Kevin,
I know this is late in the thread - but you really need to know that you are a worhless sack of shit.

You and your brainless conformity to most evil impulses of alienating multiculturalism represent the guts of what is wrong in Australia today.

If we could get rid of people you Kevin we could go a long way to reforming the mess that our society has become.

I consider people like you to be more damaging to the health of our society, the society that my sons will have to grow up in, than the murdering balkan 'bouncer'.

Posted by: Arik at January 20, 2004 at 01:46 PM

As far as the Balkan Bouncer, Zdravco Micevic goes, i wonder if Chopper Read is busy at the moment, perhaps he can pay this prick a visit, see how tough the lousy sack of shit would be then.
I remember hookes 5 fours in one over, now one punch and it really is over.
Hookes you were a fucking great bloke. RIP
