IT'S DONE
Sky News is reporting a Latham win.
Nothing yet from ABC News Radio or any of the networks.
UPDATE. Latham won 47 to 45. Live reports now on TV and radio.
Posted by Tim Blair at December 2, 2003 09:00 AMTim,
You're not supposed to be listening to the ABC remember?
It looks like you can't maintain your personal integrety when you smell blood.

Posted by: Rex at December 2, 2003 at 09:13 AMEverybody's a winner, Al! Margo has her dream candidate, and Howard gets to face someone already pulled to bits by Peter Costello. And, just in case Latham flukes an election win, we know he's essentially a right-winger!
Posted by: tim at December 2, 2003 at 09:13 AMRex,
You're not supposed to be reading this website, remember?
It looks like you can't maintain your spelling abilities when you're posting comments.
Posted by: tim at December 2, 2003 at 09:15 AMHoward gets his Christmas present early!!!! Well done on picking the result Tim.
I am with Bob Carr - looking forward to the next 9 months and no doubt it is going to a difficult time.
There is going to be severe morning sickness.
The baby is going to kick and kick and kick at its poor mother's innards until she can take no more.
Dont get me started on what the labor pains are going to be like.... but at least we know one thing: - its a boy!!
Caucus should give Latham a victory present; a bottle of strong mouthwash.
Posted by: James Riley at December 2, 2003 at 09:50 AMThey certainly picked one of the least palatable candidates available.
Well done ALP!
Posted by: Harry Tuttle at December 2, 2003 at 09:50 AMTalk about 'unity'; a nice clean 47-45 wedge down the middle. They better watch it or they'll split into minorities.
Posted by: donnyc at December 2, 2003 at 10:01 AMHa ha ha ha ha ha
The pygmies had a war and chose one of smallest of their number to oppose the Big White Chief. I repeat: ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Posted by: Toryhere at December 2, 2003 at 10:02 AMWell, at least there won't be any claims afterwards that they lost because the labor leader didn't attack Howard enough.
Posted by: Andjam at December 2, 2003 at 10:02 AMLatham won 47 to 45
I hope Chad hasn't been hanging around there.
Posted by: Andjam at December 2, 2003 at 10:04 AMThe taxpayer will be a winner as well, should Latham fall into Government which is entirely possible. In which case I would look forward to seeing Latham's attack-dog approach directed at factions, unions and other lobby groups.
Posted by: ilibcc at December 2, 2003 at 10:07 AMWhy has no-one poked fun at Kim Beasleys wife name.
Sounds like an Anus horribilis
Posted by: Choice at December 2, 2003 at 10:28 AMTo paraphrase Yogi Berra, "it's deja-Keating all over again."
Latham has been completely savaged by Costello during his time as Shadow Treasurer. Howard can now sleep soundly knowing that not only is Latham not capable of beating him, he's incapable of beating his successor.
they said all that shit about jeff kennett too
watch out for his minders to clean him up, get his policy inconsistencies in order and put good people around him
hello lodge
Posted by: ilibcc at December 2, 2003 at 11:19 AMIt's going to take more than three-six months to do an eliza Doolittle on that yob.
(Mind you, his "all westie working boy" schtick is a load of bullshit- he went to a private school and played rugby union. He's about as much a bevan as Keating, his mentor).
Posted by: Habib at December 2, 2003 at 11:26 AMHabib, you mean bogan don't you? But I get the point.
Posted by: freddyboy at December 2, 2003 at 11:42 AM"he went to a private school" - Habib.
Not sure when Hurlstone Ag was a private school. Maybe you're getting selective and private confused.
Posted by: LD at December 2, 2003 at 12:00 PMFrom the (hats off please, comrades) 'WHITLAM Institute' website: "Mark grew up in Green Valley, near Liverpool, attending Ashcroft Public School and Hurlstone Agricultural High School (Dux 1978)."
Yep, no private school education there, and how anyone could assume a school with a name like Hurl- (as in "Look out mate, I'm gunna HURL") stone Ag (Ag!) is a private school is hard to fathom.
Also from the same site:
"Mark was a political adviser, working for: Hon Gough Whitlam AC QC (1982-87 and 1993)"
Very good.
Posted by: Joe at December 2, 2003 at 12:23 PMthey have duxes (duci?) at public schools, joe?what happened to equal outcomes?
also, what was latham advising whitlam on in 1982-87 and 1993 - lawn bowls?
Posted by: ilibcc at December 2, 2003 at 12:32 PMHurl Ag is like State High in Brisbane- a GPS "public" school. Try and get in without connections. Not exactly Mt Druitt High.
Posted by: Habib at December 2, 2003 at 12:35 PMthey have duxes (duci?) at public schools, joe?what happened to equal outcomes?
I think the correct term might be "il duce" but don't quote me on that. But, ah, recognising achievement is OK, so long as we encourage all our comrades to strive towards a common goal or whatever, and give a helping hand up to those who need it. Something like that.
also, what was latham advising whitlam on in 1982-87 and 1993 - lawn bowls?
I hope so - Latham was born to be a lawn bowls instructor, IMO. Eg: "You call that a bias, you ARSECLOWN??!", punches student, etc.
Posted by: Joe at December 2, 2003 at 12:44 PMHave a gander here for more enlightenment; not exacly Struggle Street Elementary. When's he starting his clock collection?
Posted by: Habib at December 2, 2003 at 12:45 PMPolitics today - great political jokes
"Frankly, it's like watching three bald men struggling over a comb". Sterling Addison, this Sunday, on the Labor elections.
"Why has no one poked fun at Kim Beazley's wifes name? Sounds like an Annus horribilus" - Choice in this forum.
"I love it that we are represented by a man named Richard Face" - local Newcastle publication. (It's true, we are!)
"We believe the next election is winnable." Kevin Rudd, Sunrise, Monday morning.
Oh stop it, Kev, don't make me laugh...:-)
Posted by: TimT at December 2, 2003 at 12:53 PMEveryone, feel free to add political jokes of your own!
Posted by: TimT at December 2, 2003 at 12:55 PMHe lived in housing commission. His parents met at work in a box factory. I doubt that he knew anything but struggle growing up.
Posted by: Rick Squane at December 2, 2003 at 01:02 PMNoteworthy that the media keep referring to Beazley as a 'Labor heavyweight'. They just can't help themselves.
Also in today's hun: "Unions throw weight behind Beazley"
*smirk*
Well, whatever, but Hurlstone still isn't a private school. Unless some weird vagary of the NSW Education Department is escaping me.
Aside from all this, check out the incredibly vicious Hurlstone war cry:
Hurlstone, Hurlstone, yes we are
Cheer-o-woka, cheer-o-woka ego hah,
Anthrophothoguy, Kings of Hurlstone
Warrah, warrah, yah yah yah
Cheers for the hoopra, hoopra, hoopra
Tap-a-go-yah!
Is it any wonder Latham grew up to be such an angry man? I don't think so.
they have duxes (duci?) at public schools, joe?
Latin plural of Dux is Duces
leader, guide, commander, conductor
Hence the Italian 'il duce',
the French 'Duc', English 'Duke',
and the 'Doge' of Venice while we are at it.
I knew High School Latin would come in handy one day.
Posted by: Peggy Sue at December 2, 2003 at 01:19 PMHe lived in housing commission. His parents met at work in a box factory. I doubt that he knew anything but struggle growing up.
If he knew little but struggle, it was because his Dad was a gambler - see Magazine, Weekend Australian, 29/11/03.
Posted by: Peggy Sue at December 2, 2003 at 01:25 PMthanks peggs, mine failed me dreadfully
re the hurlstone war cry ... and to think that people deride hip-hop and rap
Posted by: ilibcc at December 2, 2003 at 02:26 PMLatham is not devoid of principle . He has one .
" Get the Labor snouts in the trough "
Watch him now adopt any popular policy of Howard's as fast as his backward colleagues will allow .
If they allow it quickly enough there will be a real danger of an election win .
His fervent hope no doubt is that no one will ever work out by what means he won the leadership today.
latho's parents met in a box factory?? fuck that! i was BORN in cardboard box in middle of road!!! you think you had had it tough?
Posted by: roscoe at December 2, 2003 at 06:30 PMMy parents met in 't jamjar. Now there's a plum job.
Posted by: Dave F at December 2, 2003 at 07:20 PMYou were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank.
Is Mark Latham any relation to Sir John Latham who was a Chief Justice of the High Court between 1935 and 1952? Does anybody know?
Posted by: john at December 2, 2003 at 10:31 PMHahaha. Jamjar.
Speaking of names that sound a lot like 'anus'(Beazley's wife)- I went to school at Parramatta Marist for a while and I had, for PDHPE classes, the brother of none other than Labor MP for Banks Darryl Melham. Mr. Melham's name was Anyce. Needless to say, he was derided constantly. He also believed that he was a Kenyan distance runner. I am deadly serious. He was a fruitcake.
