THE BIG COLUMN

Mentioned in this week’s Continuing Crisis column for The Bulletin are the Big Merino, the Big Cow, the Big Cheese, Davina Jackson, Kath & Kim, Amanda Vanstone, the Big Lobster, Simon Crean, John Howard, Slim Dusty, the number 13, Bend it Like Beckham, Richard Butler, Saddam Hussein, and the Queen.

A late addition to my fixation with 13 and Collingwood: Leon Davis, who played on Saturday after not being selected since round 13, kicked the 13th goal of the match.

What about Rocca? How does #13 come into that?

The Pies will lose the appeal tonight but I'm betting on a last minute Supreme Court injunction allowing Rocca to play on Saturday.

Tim, there is a roving I, an I of Silence so to speak, at the bottom of your column. What does it mean?

I'm terribly disappointed that you didn't name the Big Lobster. I actually got to see this magnificent example of Big Food, and I'm so happy that I did. When approaching from the west, it appears suddenly to the traveller, hunched near the highway as if to reach out and grab the nearest hapless vehicle.

There was also a cobwebby visitors' building that was an excellent example of Forest Service Gothic, which I thought needed more love and attention than it was getting. It made me quite homesick.

Last I heard the building had closed and it (and the Lobster) was up for sale.

Davina Jackson has no aesthetic qualifications whatsoever, which has never held back her career and therefore makes her the obvous person for the media to approach about the Canberra scupture. If she thinks it's good, it must be crap.

So you don't feel alone in your national fixation with things big, here's a shot of Atlanta, Georgia USA's Big Chicken.

That it's a fast food restaurant that's also a billboard for itself should only add to its likely targeting by virgin-seekers. Ironic, really, since no virgins have been sighted near that location for years.

Approaching the Big Lobster from the West? What sort of boat were you in?
