There are 4 sets of umpires.The guys who stands in the middle of the white sticks dressed in white coat and tie, because he decides the scoring, players clamp their jaws tight.
Boundary umpires ,guys who are confined to the spectator side of the oval white line.Unlike specctators though, he is allowed to snatch the ball and throw it,throw mind you, the skin back over his head.
Then the guys who, this Saturday, are allowed to gambol among the mud wrestling penguins and swambeasts. He gets to blow a whistle and throw the ball, in the centre, onto the mud,when he can get his mits on it.
The other guys just gambol about.
When ump blows whistle,the rules of the game hold as demonstrated in T.B.'s Language Rules link.This is why, they had to change the colour of the ump's. clothing.
