JAKARTA UPDATE

The toll now stands at 13 dead and more than 100 injured. Nine New Zealanders and two Australians are among the wounded. Reports that an Australian was killed are now being denied by the government. A Dutch national is reported dead.

Sheila O’Malley says it best: bastards.

And via The Command Post, this from DEBKA:

Australians and New Zealanders, including diplomats, have been murdered. Rumours of American diplomats dead or injured.

Australian PM, John Howard, gives immediate authorisation to Australian SAS 'Black Caps' to assassinate leading JI terrorists, including radical Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Ba'ashir. President Bush considering request from Donald Rumsfeld for deployment of DELTA team to work with Australian SAS to 'wipe out JI'.

Er, OK. Consider the source on that.

I await the reports of Broinowski, Kingston et al on the possible motives of these provocative lunchers at the Marriot Hotel.
It's hard to see how their world model could generate anything else but apologetics for it.
No doubt some foreigners were wearing thongs, drinking beer and talking loudly about sport, all of which "invites the contempt" of the local Indonsesian populace seeking to reclaim their "sense of place" and makes terrorist atrocities "predictable".
These so-called Cultural Leftists believe that fundamentalist terrorists are actually a kind of funky retro Asian Handicrafts form of Cultural Elitism.
Thus Broinowski, Kingston et al do not like Ockers, neither does Amorosi, hence Amorosi must have a reasonable point.
I hope that Jake Ryan confronts B & K with armed with one of our beers and gives them a piece of his mind.

I know it's not PC and has downsides I don't like, but it would be nice to think Australia and the US *have* sent teams in to 'dispose of' known terrorists. No muss no fuss relatively speaking.

I doubt we have though.

Maybe now Indonesia will start to get really serious about combatting terrorism. I mean killing some local Hindus and beer swilling foreigners is one thing - Threatening the upper class of Indonesian society is far more serious (for them)!!! Big mistake terrorists... BIG MISTAKE!!!!

We ex SASR people don't mind a bit of fun as in "black caps" being authorized to fix the problem but hasten to point out that in the Regiment black caps are those people NOT cadre qualified and therefore are the last people who would be used for such a mission.

Great idea though!

Jack:

IN regards to thongs, you have misunderstood the situation. This is a 5-star establishment.

Clearly they were chewing with their mouths open, and consequently must take significant responsibility for the attack.

Strewth! So that's why the Islamists tried to blow up the Kiwi cricket team -- better known as the Black Caps -- in Karachi. They're really Aussie SAS men using the cricket as a cover for their worldwide assassination operations. And which team was it that REFUSED TO PLAY in KENYA? It's all so clear to me now.

I guess they will get tough now it's closer to home. Megawati must be worried they want to turn her into Kilowati.
