I thought this article was a spoof until I realised that Godwell's an "adjunct lecturer in indigenous studies at James Cook University in Townsville." Then everything made sense.

BTW: any word on the connection between Margot Kingston's woodpile nigger and Godwell's house nigger? I can't remember a time when the dreaded N word has been bandied around so much in the media.

As an Anglo-Celt, I am insulted by Godwell's rejection of his 98% Euro heritage. What is it about us, why do they hate us so much they deny our shared ancestry?

Jake D: at first I thought you were right, but upon reflection I'm not so sure. Returning to the source, I find that Margot said the dark individual was 'in' the woodpile. This surely indicates one of two things; an individual surrounded by faggots, or a woodcutting accident. In any case, it seems certain that the woodpile nigger would be unable carry out the assignment you suggest. It would probably be more accurate to state that the relationship consists of the house nigger helping the dusky woodpile guy from the heap. Contrary to Godwell's claim that the house nigger does great damage, it's clear that they have the capacity to do good.

If Tim hadn't vowed never to mention Margot's name again, perhaps he could ask the good woman to join us and clear up this confusion.

You know what they say - the whiter the aboriginal, the more extreme they fell they they have to be. Look at Michael Mansell. I've met real aboriginals and they don't talk like this.

It's bad enough that she looks like an English granny with a name right out of Shakespeare. However, her entire interview (unfortunately not transcribed) was peppered with "what we aborginals know" and "what you white people don't understand" and other patronising scolds. Read through the article to get an impression of her tone of voice.

To her I say, WAKE UP TO YOURSELF, LOVE! YOU'RE MORE NORTHUMBERLAND THAN NOONGAR!

It's one of my pet hates that someone significantly less than half "Aboriginal" is somehow completely divorced from any Anglo-Australian heritage.

You get that here in the states alot, especially at University. Someone will say, well I'm "X"-American, and they expect you to make certain assumptions about them AND to give them lee-way in making rediculous statements. The two more grevious (sp?) examples I ran into were ethnic minorities from priveledged backgrounds (i.e. prep schools, etc; and this at an Ivy School) trying to speak for the common man and decying the repressing they experienced. The second was the blond-haired blue-eyed Indian. Now, there are millions of Americans with Indian blood, especially from certain tribes like the Cherokee [including me]. However, everytime I heard some suburban raised white kid say, "Well, I'm a Native American," I knew it was time to turn off me ears. I can only imagine what it's like for some Dinae from the reservation to have to listen to.

It's little wonder so little satire is written these days. With, for example, what we're asked to believe passes for 'indigenous', straight narration can appear more satirical than anything Swift ever came up with.
And what could be more satirical than the descendants of those well known 19th Century raping murdering Bass Strait sealers, Mansell and Everitt, now demanding that WE apologise and make recompense, for what THEIR ancestors did?
I simply feel grateful that my ancestors had a MUCH better record in their dealings with aboriginals than did Mansell, Everitt et al's ancestors. I'd find it difficult to sleep at night if mine had done anything near as despicable as theirs have.
