I certainly hope those headlines ring true. It will just go to show Howard picked the right man!

The first point is already there - suitability for a post is determined by genetalia, apparently.

Professor Winterton said it was a s hame Mr Howard did not find a woman for the job.

A spokeswoman for the Women's Electoral Lobby said it was greatly disappointed a woman had not been appointed as governor-general and that the Prime Minister must be "as blind as a bat" if he could not find any suitable female candidates.

Check out today's Fin Review and The Australian - it's already started. HowardHaters Tony Walker and Mike Steketee are so disappointed by Howard's boring appointment.
Apparently Howard has missed a golden opportunity for some good old fashioned tokenism in favour of someone who doesn't see the role as a soapbox for an unelected figurehead to preach to the unenlightened rabble who pay his salary.
Howard really is such a disappointment to progressives!

I am hanging out for the response from the Australian Commies and the kiddies commie club at Resistance. No doubt it will be along the lines of -

"New GG further proof of Howard's Fascism"

"New GG further proof of Howard's Sexism"

"New GG further proof of Howard's ____ism" (insert ism of choice)

"Howard utter failure to appoint transgender lesbian aboriginal albino whale as GG, a setback to reconcilliation and education/health/public housing/abortion funding"

How about this in the Straits Times:

Appointment of Vietnam vet condemned by Dr Mahathir as example of Aussie militarism and racism likely to provoke another Bali bombing

You poor, oppressed bastards, suffering under the yoke of the evil liberal media. How the Australian right is suffering!

My bleeding heat goes out to you all...

Wouldn't be surprised if the twiny communards aren't already in group therapy sessions, bawling their little spleens out,and uttering naughty words in one sustained chanted rant against Howard, rightwing bastards, the armed forces and so on down the litany of woes.

This cheers one up ever so much.
Had crossed the fingers Major-Gen.Jeffries would be the new G.G. And, lo, it worked.

Huzzah!

Actually Mark is kind of on target here. We really should not complain. We are getting what we want pretty with the exception of value for our ABC dollar.

I have witnesed some wonderful things: Brian Burke being stripped of his AC and being sent to prison. Turfing of the Taliban, turfing of Sadam. The Wall coming down, Jeff Kennett re-inventing Victoria, Pixies live, Carmen Lawrence being clubbed to death while saving a whale in Gage Roads... OK I imagined the last one.

All in all the righties have had a pretty good last 15 years.
