ALERT, NOT ALARMED

Some lunatic armed with wooden stakes attacked several people aboard a Qantas flight. The passengers and crew didn’t much care for that:

The 40-year-old man stabbed two flight attendants and injured two other people before he was overpowered by crew and passengers aboard QF1737. He was in custody tonight.

Shocked passengers later hailed a 38-year-old male flight attendant as a hero for helping to subdue the attacker, while being stabbed in the head.

Several passengers helped restrain the would-be hijacker with plastic ties, bundling him between two seats before the flight returned to Melbourne and made an emergency landing, federal police said.

Good work.

You know, I miss Buffy too, but...

I'm still waiting to hear the details of the attacker's ethnicity. On report described him as a "very fit" Caucasian "with a dark tan".

3:1 we find out he's a Muslim... not that it matters, of course. No signs of terrorisim here.

"Plastic ties"?

Is this some Aussie fashion trend that has yet to surface in the US?

[HomerSimpson]mmmm..... Wooden stakes...[/HomerSimpson]

This really upsets the pre-flight security checks; shouldn't wooden stakes be banned?

Posted by: Steve at May 30, 2003 at 02:15 AM

Pointed sticks, eh?

If only the passengers had had fresh fruit available, this would've never happened.

You beat me to it.

One can only hope that the stakes were implanted as suppositories in this bastard so they wouldn't uh..., get lost, yea that's it, after the plane landed.

And I hope there were plenty of splinters.

Gee, does that make me mean-spirited and hateful?

Posted by: charles austin at May 30, 2003 at 04:26 AM

Might be a decent gesture to give the people who subdued this b*****d a medal, or a cash award of some type.

I hope they spent ten minutes or so jumping up and down on the freak.

Posted by: Mike James at May 30, 2003 at 05:40 AM

This is not to say we can be complacent but let's not lose sight of the plusses in this story. For starters, the primary weapons of the would-be highjacker were wood. If he had tried this 18 months ago, he probably would have been able to smuggle on something a lot worse. No security measures will trap everything unless travellers are willing to face a check-in process that takes many, many hours and includes body searches (the wooden stakes were smuggled in on his person).

Heightened security plus the quick reaction from the passengers and crew contributed to the failure of this disturbed animal's plans. .

Tim, how did you miss the big news - free beer?

More likely than not caucasian, but I'd be very surprised if the person were albino.

Posted by: Andjam at May 30, 2003 at 10:02 AM

Charles Austin, one also must be mean-spirited, your suggestion is proper,a very good one.On the other hand, after he has been tried in court and convicted, perhpas said operation could be performed on the turd.

Posted by: d at May 30, 2003 at 10:17 AM

I'm betting the guys name is Jihadi Mohammad

Posted by: Harry at May 30, 2003 at 10:26 AM

Not Jihadi Mohammad, Harry, probably Bob Brown. You know dickhead lefties like him can't stand the fact that they were soooooooo wrong on the war.

It was heading to Tassy and the wanker was wearing a brown suit (probably hemp fabric) and using wooden(biodegradeable) weapons and brandishing an aerosol can (evil product causing "Global Warming") He was probably trying to gain publicity for some bullshit Kyoto agreement or some other wank. (By the way, does anybody else find it odd that Kyoto itself refuses to sign the Kyoto agreement) And he got the shit kicked out of him by a 25 year old stewardess. What more evidence do we need?

It all fits. Though they did say that he didn't say anything and that does not sound like the Bob Brown we all know and despise.

You know I have always said that Geeks are inherently evil. :-)

Alleged hijacker appears in court
May 30, 2003

THE man charged with trying to hijack a Qantas jet and stabbing two flight attendants appeared briefly in a Melbourne court today.

David Mark Robinson, 40, of Bignell Road, East Bentleigh in Melbourne's south-east, faced Melbourne Magistrates Court charged with three offences against the 1991 Crimes (Aviation) Act.

He was charged with attempting to hijack a plane engaged in a prescribed flight and two counts of being a person on board an aircraft engaged in flight committing an act of violence against a member of the aircraft.

Robinson, an unemployed computer analyst, made no application for bail and was not required to enter a plea.

He was remanded to reappear at the same court on August 8.

We are missing a major point here. I'd like to understand how this man arrived at a place of such desperation that he was left with no choice but to attack these oppressors. They probably charged him for his ticket (evil capitalism), did not serve his meal i a timely manner (discrimination), and probably seated him in coach rather than 1st class (occupation). We need to look at ourselves if we are to ever stop this from happening again!!!!!

Posted by: J. Dwyer at May 30, 2003 at 12:36 PM

apropos J.Dwyer's summation: more sociologists need to be trained to study the causes which caused the cause of the picket weilding victim's rampage. And another army of pyschos - ah, pschyologists to : a. help the victim by adjusting his psyche to unjust society, and to help the meanies who produce such victims to understand their meaniness and arrive at a closure to their dark past as meanies. Plenty of work ahead for governments, centuries of it , ... and that trivial consideration the taxes.

This attack has made me feel safer about flying.

After Sep 11 I realised about the same day that unless airlines are prepared to do body cavity searches, weapons can be smuggled on board planes.

What pleases me is how quickly passengers reacted and subdued this (mentally ill?) man. I think the 'not my business' type reaction that is often evident in the Western World might have taken a few steps backwards, and its great to see.

I'd choose Qantas with brave, able bodied Aussie blokes and shelias ready to pounce any day!

Posted by: Elizabeth thompson at May 30, 2003 at 01:42 PM

I couldn't care less about his motives, background or beliefs. Somebody just please kick the shit out of him. Everyone on that plane should be awarded a "kick-the-shit-out-of-Mr-hijacker" ticket redeemable anytime with their own choice of boots. A brown suit with white pin stripes for gawd's sake, has he no idea?

"No, no! I ordered it medium rare!"

(ducking)

Posted by: Eric at May 30, 2003 at 02:38 PM

Yeah, damn right! Anyone who ever does, has done, or will do generic Really Bad Acts is a Muslim! The rest of the world is all peachy clean, with nobody doing anything wrong!

Well, except those damn Asians. Never trusted them. And blacks. I mean, there's all this reverse racism, innit? And them faggots are capable of comitting crimes too, y'know! Just look at Kirby J! He was gay back when it was against the law! How much more criminal can you get? And then there's [insert hated minority of the week]... No, no prejudice here. Move along, please.

Posted by: mark at May 30, 2003 at 02:56 PM

Oh, and FWIW, I agree with bargarz. The fact that this month's Unstable Airborne Violent Fuckwit had to resort to *wood* -- I mean, *wood*, fer cryin' out loud -- is an encouraging sign, surely?

Posted by: mark at May 30, 2003 at 02:58 PM

Who are you directing that sarcasm at Mark or are you just trolling for hits again?.
Or are you trying to taint Tim's site with your perception of him?.

Posted by: Gary at May 30, 2003 at 05:57 PM

Gary, read the goddamn thread before you direct your scorn, okay?

Go on. Re-read the comments. Until you can be bothered to put *some* effort into trying to understand the posts of those you disagree with, don't even try to refute them.

And just in case you need the hint: I was referring to some comments made, not Tim's main post. But given Tim's post, I should have thought that was obvious; but I suppose you didn't bother reading *that*, either.

Posted by: mark at May 30, 2003 at 11:16 PM

I know allot about your obsession with the neo-con,VRWC by your comments on other blogs and your need to prove yourself by belittling people so your little game is to transparent not to notice.

Posted by: Gary at May 31, 2003 at 12:39 AM

One more thing Mark your control fetish also tells me a lot about you.

Posted by: Gary at May 31, 2003 at 01:24 AM

Should have dropped down below 10,000 feet, kicked his sorry butt out the door and went on their way!

Posted by: Bill Oh at May 31, 2003 at 06:14 AM

True Aussie spirit was displayed during the episode.; try and hurt us, and we'll rise as one and beat the shit through you. But then again, if it was some leftie on the plane, he/she would say to let the hijacker express his anger and frustration, caused by the eeeeevil Australian Government. Vale all the decent blokes who said "fuck this", and jumped on him, saving everyone. Maybe a free beer is in order.

Posted by: Douglas at May 31, 2003 at 09:02 PM

Gary, the rest of your comments make sense (they're untrue, but they make sense), but could you please rephrase "I know allot about your obsession with the neo-con,VRWC by your comments on other blogs", preferably in English. By email, if you could, so we aren't disrupting Tim's other readers any further in this thread with this discussion.

Posted by: mark at June 1, 2003 at 02:26 PM

Douglas, posting lies about leftists may amuse the knuckle-dragger set, but it should be above everyone -- left, right or centre -- who considers themselves capable of actually stating their point of view without reverting to untruths.

Posted by: mark at June 1, 2003 at 02:28 PM

You have just proved my point Mark, you are also a hypocrite.

Posted by: Gary at June 1, 2003 at 03:48 PM

Gary, if you'd care to explain, I'm sure you know how to find my email address (if not, just try clicking on my name in the last few comments).

If you're worried that I may be trying to hide a potential verbal drubbing from Tim's lovely audience by "taking it outside" where no-one can see, then if you'd like we can arrange to post a summary later. But for now, please, let's take it out of this thread: Tim (and his other readers) have suffered enough, and I'm frankly not going to continue to argue with you in this thread -- only by email.

That's my last word on this topic; I'll not reply to you in this thread again -- if you want to talk to me, you know how.
