SOME MURDEROUS DICTATORS ARE JUST NICER
Mark Steyn on Diana Mosley and other fans of dictators:
Posted by Tim Blair at August 19, 2003 05:08 PMGranted, Diana got turned on by totalitarianism, but she's a piker compared with world-class thug fetishists like Ted Heath, who still admires Mao, or Pierre Trudeau, who yelled "Viva Castro!" in Havana and regretted the liberation of Eastern Europe, or Jimmy Carter, who's never met a psychotic dictator he couldn't make a case for: Mengistu, Assad, Kim Jong-Il... Ceausescu? "Our goals are the same," declared Carter. "We believe in enhancing human rights." When Diana gushed over a monster, she was a silly kid, not head of government. What's Jimmy and Ted and Pierre's excuse?
Maybe they all have a thing about uniforms; lets face it, if World War 2 had been a fashion parade, the Huns would have romped home.
Posted by: Habib Bickford at August 19, 2003 at 05:33 PMI was wondering if someone was going to put in a kind word for Lady Mosley, and I'm surprised Steyn did it. Brave thing, really, since he's going to be knocked around quite a bit for doing it.
His point will be lost in the "conservative columnist praises friend of Hitler, who married in Goebbels home" wave to come at him soon.
I remember her being pointed out to me while walking down the street in Paris, and was struck by the fact that here was a lady for whom Hitler was someone she knew and *remembered* and not, as for me, a historical figure. What a strange thing that must be, I thought. I think I'll give her book a read and make up my own mind on it.
Posted by: KevinV at August 19, 2003 at 05:58 PMThet can be a strange experience, KevinV. I once met a woman who gave Hitler a bouquet of flowers when she was a little girl. She's old and crazy now.

They're fucking idiots.
Any other questions you need answered? ;-)
