SADLY, PEOPLE STILL HATE THE GREAT WHITE
Beats me how these things are decided, but the grey nurse is now officially the most loved shark in New South Wales:
Posted by Tim Blair at May 28, 2003 01:32 PMGrey nurse sharks will be extinct in NSW within 40 years, a scientific report commissioned by the State Government has found, and its own protection measures are failing to stop the decline.
A two-year tagging program completed by NSW Fisheries has found the population has dwindled to as low as 300 and the research concluded the shark is close to dying out.
"This is a critically low level," the Fisheries Minister, Ian Macdonald, said.
"No one wants to see the state's most loved shark become extinct and if more protection can be given, we'll do it."
Well, it's MY favourite shark. Not that anyone's ever bothered to ask me . . . .

Well, me and Mrs. Earthling were doing some diving at Norman Reef on the Great Barrier Reef, QLD, and she decided that she sure did not like the White-Tipped Reef Shark -- she nearly lept out of the water when she saw the 3 footer.
For what it's worth.
(My favorite shark, here in California, is the Great White --- because, after all, Great Whites kill more people in California than anywhere else and we need the population control)
Posted by: Andrew at May 28, 2003 at 04:29 PMI like nurse sharks. I remember there was outrage years ago when some knob got an explosive tipped harpoon and killed 20 in a day.
Posted by: Ken at May 28, 2003 at 07:30 PMHow can you have a favourite shark when they are all so tasty?
Posted by: Yobbo at May 28, 2003 at 11:35 PMWhat kind of idiot loves a *shark*? Grey, White, Blue, or any other color?
"They do three things: eat, swim and breed."
