SUCH A KIND LEADER

I flew to Melbourne yesterday to be with my grandmother, who has just left hospital after suffering a stroke. It hasn't dulled her any:

Me: "Did you hear that Yasser Arafat is dead?"

Grandmother: "Really? I wonder who'll get his tea-towel."

She's 93 years old. Maybe the alleged dignitaries who'll appear at Yasser’s funeral can hold an auction for that signature garment of his:

Yasser Arafat's body arrived in Egypt today as authorities prepared for a strictly controlled and brief military funeral where dignitaries from around the world would pay their respects.

One dignitary has indicated he won't be turning up:

Prime Minister John Howard has been criticised by the Palestinian representative in Australia for saying he will not be among the many heads of state at President Yasser Arafat's funeral.

Ali Kazak says it reflects badly on Australia.

Mr Kazak says the death of Mr Arafat is a terrible loss.

"It's such a sad time for us all, Yasser Arafat was such a kind leader," he said.

Nice to see his followers embracing Yasser’s philosophy of kindness:

The militant Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades urged militants to attack Israel to avenge the "Zionist assassination" of Yasser Arafat, who died hours earlier in a Paris hospital, said a statement received by AFP today.

"Zionist Israel and the government of (Israeli Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon are responsible for the assassination of our leader by putting him under siege," the armed offshoot of Arafat's mainstream Fatah party said.

Announcing a state of high-alert across the Palestinian territories, it called on people to "hit out and strike the occupation everywhere. This crime will not go without punishment."

Did Yasser die because he was "put under siege" or because he was poisoned? Al-Aqsa and Hamas can’t keep their story straight:

"I hold Israel responsible for the crime of killing Abu Ammar," said Hamas’ top political leader, Khaled Mashaal. He offered no evidence.

"Yes, death is an act of God and a man the age of brother Abu Ammar may die a natural death, but all the circumstances which we have seen in the past two weeks and medical reports indicate that brother Abu Ammar had been poisoned," Mashaal said.

These balanced and rational people clearly deserve statehood.

There's something disturbing in the SMH article you linked to. The mourners "lining the roads" were said to be shouting 'From Paris to Jerusalem, we are all Palestinians'.

Isn't this the same country whose most prominant newspaper ran a 12th September front page claiming that 'We are all Americans'?

The latest incarnation seems to be closer to the truth, though the frogs sure seem confused about who they actaully are.

Hope your grandmother is OK, Tim.

Say what you like about Yasser, he always had a spare pen.

I hope your grandmother is improving, tim. But I have to say, she sounds sharper than most of the world leaders today.

Posted by: The Real JeffS at November 12, 2004 at 11:24 AM

God bless your grandmother and thank her for the smile! Most folks these days don't have a knack for gentle "dry" humor.

Posted by: Mary at November 12, 2004 at 11:32 AM

Re the P.M. not attending the funeral, I'm reminded of a scene in "Apocalypse Now" where Willard talks about being "sick of lies". Well, it would be a lie for Howard to attend and personally I applaud him for not indulging in such hypocrisy (not that he isn't guilty of it on other occasions!)

Posted by: Kevin Francis at November 12, 2004 at 11:37 AM

News Flash: the funeral arrangements have been changed.

Posted by: fidens at November 12, 2004 at 11:40 AM

Ah, the kindness of Yasser....let's ask a Lebanese Maronite Christian or Druze about that.

And best wishes to your Grandmother, Tim.

Posted by: Brendan at November 12, 2004 at 11:42 AM

I thought Ali Kazak showed a lot of restraint. He really could have blown up over it, you know.

Posted by: Jim Treacher at November 12, 2004 at 11:57 AM

Best to your grandmother. I think she put Mr. Arafat in the proper perspective.

Tell Grandma she's gotten some chuckles from a Yank who wishes her the best!

"Yasser Arafat's body arrived in Egypt today as authorities prepared for a strictly controlled and brief military funeral where dignitaries from around the world would pay their respects."

Target rich environment? Hmmm . . . OK, just wishful thinking. The only way we'd get away with it is if a Palestinian suicide bomber did it, which would of course be a fitting send-off, eh?

Best wishes to your grandmother, Tim. I hope she gets well soon.

Let them demand an inquiry into his death if they think he was poisioned. I think Israel would love the truth about his illness to get out. The PA is really trying to hide something.

Read the Grandma link, my nanna died on 23 Jan 2003 aged 93 (born on 4 August 1909), she dozed off on the lounge in front of the telly after having a cappuccino with Mum at the local shopping centre, her daily outing. I had so many interesting conversations with her about how the world was when she was young and how it was later. No television. The radio was always called "the wireless", toilet was "the lavatory", she was pretty sharp, although deafness had made things a bit difficult for her.
I could just hear my nanna say something about the tea towel, and it gave me a chuckle to hear what your grandma said.
Hope she's chipper soon!

Posted by: kae at November 12, 2004 at 01:07 PM

Its the most likely scenario, Arafat was known as a homosexual that roared 'like a tiger' and all his medical symptoms tally. Plus the absurd secrecy, rushing off to France to be feted by Chirac.

I'd be staying away from the tea towel - AIDS is a WMD.

My God this is turning out to be a good couple of weeks. First, The Despondency of the Moonbats™, a Schadenfreudefest of impotent grizzling and foot-stamping by people who should be wedgied half-hourly for the rest of their pitiful lives, and now this: Arafat croaks ignominiously in a Frog hospital. Plus I'm off to the beach tomorrow with mates to get drunk for three days. The weather's just turned and we're looking at five months of sunshine. Next thing I know I'll be kidnapped by Salma Hayek and forced to be her filthy love-slave aboard her own personal floating brewery.

Best wishes to your grandmother Tim.

The ABC (Australia) had a 15 minute 'tribute' to Arafat this morning. It almost made me puke.

Looks like the silent majority disagrees with the chattering classes again: the poll on news.com.au has him a terrorist over a freedom fighter at 60 to 40%. Vote or die!

I say we give them Massachusetts...

Richard, if we give them Taxachussetts (not a bad idea), the first thing that happens is we saw the state loose from the North American continent, tow it out into the middle of the Atlantic, and nail it down out there.

Then move the PA there. And not before.

Today is the day to remember the Slaughtered Children of Ma'alot, Israel's Beslan and part of the long forgotten hideous work of ARAFAt.

Ehud Olmert recalls

In 1974, as a newly elected Knesset member, I watched the terrorist assault on a school in Ma'alot as it played out along Israel's northern border. Palestinian gunmen, ironically from a PLO faction funded by the Russians, infiltrated a high school and took dozens of students hostage. Before the army could free the children, the terrorists managed to kill 26 of them. At the time, the idea that a ruthless terrorist could deliberately murder Israeli children seemed almost beyond even our belief. What sort of desperate animals, we demanded, seek to advance their political agendas by slaughtering children? Surely the international order would insist that all the culprits be hunted down and punished.

But the world voiced only silence, and business went on as usual. Israelis were forced to learn that our tragedies were always going to be personal affairs, and that there would be no united international response to terror. Indeed, the democratic states in Europe provided the first cracks in the front, insisting on maintaining relations with the PLO after Ma'alot while accepting that there were no real consequences when it comes to Arab terror."

Posted by: davo at November 12, 2004 at 02:10 PM

Israelis were forced to learn that our tragedies were always going to be personal affairs, and that there would be no united international response to terror.

And now America after 911, has learnt the same lessons as the world sends its creme de la creme to this scum's funeral, headed by the likes of Jacque Chirac.

Posted by: davo at November 12, 2004 at 02:15 PM

In a just world, John Howard would get a Nobel peace prize for boycotting that cockroach's funeral, and instead of lowering their flag half mast, the UN would have commerorated Arafat's death by honking horns and passing out candy.

Posted by: Sean P at November 12, 2004 at 02:27 PM

The cavalcade of 'dignitaries' lining up to shed crocodile tears at Arafat's demise puts me in mind of Eamon de Valera's signing of the book of condolences after Hitler killed himself, hardly an episode when the infant Republic of Ireland covered itself in glory.

Posted by: David Gillies at November 12, 2004 at 02:32 PM

David Gillies
And why will I not be surprised if the IRA are well represented at the funeral?
perhaps the one occasion when the presence of a suicide bomber would prove an ironic conclusion to a life that has caused so much pain and suffering.

Posted by: davo at November 12, 2004 at 02:45 PM

The Real Jeff S — I've often fantasized about having the Nimitz tow Manhattan out into the Gulf Stream and letting it drift off to Belgium where it belongs, but that's just whimsical. Besides, if we cut Massachusetts free after we give it to the Palestinians, how are the libertarians gonna shoot at them after they take over New Hampshire?

Posted by: richard mcenroe at November 12, 2004 at 03:03 PM

Those sick Arab propagandists have brainwashed the Palestinian hordes into believing Arafat was poisoned or assassinated by Israel.

I can't wait for the spread of freedom, liberal institutions, communications and of course the blogosphere, to reach the Arab world.

Posted by: Jono at November 12, 2004 at 03:04 PM

Davo — The real irony would be if the funeral was interrupted by a large charge of RDX...

Posted by: richard mcenroe at November 12, 2004 at 03:04 PM

I feel compelled to point out that even if Johnny _were_ at the funeral, he would not be "among the many heads of state at President Yasser Arafat's funeral. " Johnny's a head of government, not a head of state. The head of state is either Mike or Liz, depending on your interpretation of the constitution.

Posted by: Jorge at November 12, 2004 at 03:26 PM

On second thoughts, if I may nitpick my own nitpicking, stating that he is among the heads of state doesn't necessarily imply that he's a head of state. If he were tiptoeing among the tulips, that wouldn't imply that he were a tulip.

Never mind, carry on.

Funny line on the Dennis Miller show two nights ago, "It seems Yasser Arafat's wife Suha was unable to recognize her husband at first because the French nurses had given him a bath."

Yes once again after the first prize for the Adolf Hitler condoleances, Ireland WINS AGAIN !
eat your heart out Hamas Helen!

With the exception of John Howard, the rest of the world's leaders proved, by their comments, to be; a) complete idiots, or, b) craven cowards. In some cases, (Jacques Chirac comes to mind) both apply.

But Irish President Mary McAleese topped even Jacques Chirac, saying in a statement that, "President Arafat has been a key figure in the efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution of the Israel-Palestine conflict on the basis of two states living in peace within secure and agreed borders.”

Completely abandoning reality, she reinvented the bloodstained terrorist on the fly, saying, “His passing is a tragic loss to the Palestinian people for whom he has been a unifying figure for decades.”

Knowing the 'Palestinian' fascination with body parts I thought it would be a lovely gesture if the Chairman's body were to be chopped up into thousands of pieces - to be given away in specially marked cans of dog food.

Every intelligence service in the world knows Arafat died of AIDS. That is why he was treated at France's No. 1 AIDS hospital. That is still a crime in Arab lands, but it will come out soon.

Contrast all of this with the amount of time they dedicated to the death of Ronald Reagan earlier this year. "Balanced" and "unbiased" my arse, SBS!

40 days of feasting.

So November 11 is now a Jewish holiday. "He tried to kill us. He failed. Let's eat."

If the Palestinian Arabs had the brains God gave an oyster they would take this as an opportunity to clean out the whole rotten mess of the PA and its attendant terrorist groups. If they want a state or a life they would. Sadly, I think they want neither. They will be content to live in squalor and under tyrannical oppression, just so long as they can continue to kill the Jews.
