In the spirit though in a slightly different part of the world, ABC Radio (Aust) this morning was again referring to Hamas "militia" attacking Jewish settlers in retaliation for Israeli Defence Forces killing Hamas "foot soldiers". I've never been one to yell at the radio before but my neighbours at least now know that Hamas are "terrorists".

"Underground" is used as well when the word terrorist is seeing as being too judgemental but "freedom fighter" too risible. See also "pre state militia". I suppose I have less difficulties with those who support their aims describing terrorists as such but why international news organisations feel the need to do the same escapes me.

Well last night on Lateline, Tony Jones let "terrorist" slip. The correspondent in Moscow was clearly distressed as she didn't want to seem like a fool by following up with one of the GayBC euphemisms. So for one interview, they were "terrorists" on the GayBC.

Absolutely, Robert, Tim needs to be "fair and balanced" in his post. Just because 98% of the MSM tries to soft-pedal the idealogical component of Islamist terrorism, Tim shouldn't overlook Fox's misdeed of euphemistically referring to Muslim terrorists as "Muslim terrorists", instead of the @#&! SOBs they are.

I think "Allah" is just an Arabic word used for "God", and that Egyptian Christians sometimes use the word as well, and it is thought that Jesus Christ used a similar word as well. It's not a name like Athena or Zeus.

From what I've read it's a contraction of "al illah", meaning "the god". Others say it means, "the greatest" - as in, "the greatest of the gods". If it is "the god" it may refer to the god of the Ka'bah (you know, that rock in Mecca that Muslims walk around) whose name, apparently, is H ubal (cf Hebrew H aBaal = the Baal). Hubal was one of a pantheon of pre-Islamic deities. His symbol was the crescent moon, he had two daughters and he was worshipped by Mohammed's father.

Those of us who aren't completely Biblically illiterate understand that God's name is YWHW, or "I AM".
