i hope the spaniards will also remove all images of jesus, because us sinners may be intimidated...especially if we're fat canadian kids

"Santiago y cierra Espana" doesn't mean, "Saint James, we will reconquer Spain." I wonder where the BBC gets that notion?

It means, "Saint James, and close Spain." That's the imperative like, "Cierra la boca," or "Cierra el puerto," or yo comere' mi sombrero.

I've heard that it means ``Saint James, and close [ranks], Spain.'' In other words, up and at 'em, and may St. James be with us when we fight.

if the statue is inside the cathedral, as it is, wouldn't 'the others' be offended by the cathedral itself to begin with?

"Start demolishing, fellas"

As for the meaning of the phrase, BBC had it quite right, I have to point out. It means invoking Santiago's help in the reconquering war (hence the statue's symbolism; the old man didn't kill anyoone himself) and, when the fight is done, to close Spain to outside invaders.

Christ's bowels.

I was fulle Aware ye Mainestreame Protestant churches were Filthy with Appeasors, Cowards, Moral Relativists, Pacifists and other Persons of degenerate Character and Morals, and that ye Papistry ys still Bug-riddene with cryot-Bolshevist Groupes like the "catholic" "worker", but this is an All Time New Lowwe. It denieth 1) the historical Patrimony of a (once?) proud Nation, as well as denying Historie ytself.

Is the Spanish Nation as Cowardley as its Prime Ministers and Prelates would lead the Dispassionte Observor to Believve?

Praps it is Tyme for ye Spanishhe to duste Off the Bookes of Moorish Grammar in preparation for ye Re-reconquista.

Yeah, just what is up with Google News? I get the feeling that there is an awful lot of leftists at Google, because I've noticed quite a few liberal blogs and news web site, like axisoflogic.com and counterpunch.com, that are listed as news at Google News. The closest conservative example of this is frontpagemag.com.

Yeah, but there's an outstanding line in Pepin's comments:

Ted Rall is a true American hero. Despite losing both his arms and legs in a tragic accident in Afghanastan (sic), he still manages to draw a cartoon every week using nothing but his ass.
