MISSION NOT ACCOMPLISHED
The Bali bombing was intended to rescue locals from Western depravity, according to murderer Amrozi:
You can see from their attitude . . . they come here, people such as Americans, the Jews and their allies. They want to colonise, not just to play. They want to control Muslim people. They make us weak and they take our people to bars.
Since the bombing, Balinese who previously earned their living in the tourism industry have been forced into other work, as The Bulletin's Eric Ellis reports:
It's in Bali's north that western paedophiles have long preyed on villages, traditionally the source of so many of Bali's tourism workers but now, since the bombs devastated the island's economy, thrown into overnight penury.
"The bomb made the paedophile problem worse," she explains. "It was a simple matter of economics; people got thrown out of work, they needed the money, and there were accommodating European men to help them."

Not to mention that Bali is probably the oldest tropical tourist destination in the world, and yet maintains its distinctive culture rather well (get out beyond Denpasar and Kuta or the main street of Ubud).

The company I work for used to have an account with an army in the Middle East (discretion for the sake of job security). Whenever these guys - normally very strict Muslims - would come over to meet with the corporate heads in New York, all they ever wanted to do was drink and hang out in strip clubs. True, we take them to bars, but that's because they *ask* us to.

Miranda is correct that many Jews fled to Moslem countries to escape persecution by the Spanish Inquisition. Many went to the Ottoman Empire and there are still a significant number in Turkey. They were generally treated quite well, certainly no worse than the other non-Moslem populations and some held high government positions under the Sultans.
It was surely deliberate that JI chose to bomb Bali. Being non-Moslems, the Balinese could be easily sacrificed. Imagine the outcry if they had bombed a bar in Djakarta and killed lots of Moslems!

Jews were treated well in the Islamic world, about the same level as Christians, the other "People of the Book." But they were second-class citizens. The term "treated well" is only true when compared to their reception in other states, particularly in Christian Europe. Compared to modern Western society though, Islam in the twelth was no haven of tolerance. You weren't allowed to hold public office, work in certain areas, fraternise with Muslims, etc.
Of course we are missing out a large proportion of the Middle-Eastern population who weren't treated well by Muslim or Christian, which were pagans. They were usually forcibly converted, or killed.
Although claiming Jews were mistreated by Christians doesn't paint the whole picture, as Orthodox Christians mistreated Cathars, Albegensians, Arians, etc.
Certainly not a haven of enlightenment.
But I think the main point is this: Rabbiting on about 12th Century Islam's "enlightenment" doesn't excuse the current mainstream state of the Religion. Islam is still effectively a medieval religion, albeit a relatively enlightened one. The Islamic world needs an Enlightenment, just like the West experienced.

A benevolent calif would die and the next one would reverse his decrees and persecute the Jews. There were many Muslim societies from Spain to Central Asia, some of which lasted for over 1000 years. The examples usually given of benevolent Islam are: Spain before the Reconquista, the Ottoman Empire from the 1600s on, and Morocco. There are many other examples of Muslim treatment of Jews from Mohammed on, that no one mentions.
