RED-HEADED STRANGENESS

It’s all about oil, and the American public is a “bewildered herd”. Kucinich supporter Willie Nelson might want to loosen his ponytail a little:

There's so many things going on in the world
Babies dying
Mothers crying
How much oil is one human life worth
And what ever happened to peace on earth

And the bewildered herd is still believing
Everything we've been told from our birth
Hell they won't lie to me
Not on my own damn TV
But how much is a liar's word worth
And whatever happened to peace on earth

UPDATE. Fidens in comments writes: “Don't underestimate the difficulty in capturing all the leftoid shibboleths in musical form ... and it RHYMES.” Kucinich himself is also something of a rhyme wizard:

CAFTA not only rhymes with NAFTA, but will extend the economic 'disasta' that Ohio knows something about.

K-Dogg is the masta.

And yet, (again) we must ask -- how did America go from being sooooooo smart in 1992 (with the Dems in complete control) to a "bewildered herd" in 2004?

I submit that it is due to the Radiation Wars of 2001, when the US attacked Europe, Asia, and South America because of a rumor that oil prices would be raised by 5 cents. Nothing drops your IQ like a Radiation War...

Saddam murdering 1000 people a month is "peace on earth"?

Aaaaahh!
Senility is SO comforting!

Posted by: Pedro the Ignorant at January 2, 2004 at 01:04 PM

Don't underestimate the difficulty in capturing all the leftiod shibboleths in musical form.

"It's all about oil"; "Bush lied"; "dissent suppressed" and the absolute conviction of their moral superiority... it's all there. And it RHYMES people.

Willie Nelson is a friggin genius.

PS The post should be titled "RED-HEADED STEPCHILD" Tim, as in smack-him-round-like-a...

Posted by: Fidens at January 2, 2004 at 01:10 PM

Willie Nelson causes much mirth,
Car-azy A-rabs run amuck,
Liberals don't give a fuck,
His Momma never should a' given birth,
With eejits like him occupyin' earth.

Lookin' like a ponytail on a Smurf,
Loves assholes like Saddam,
Asshats think he is The Man,
Too busy worryin' about the surf,
That's what happened to peace on earth.

But how much is a liar's word worth
Your word's worth less than nothing, Willy. Thanks for asking.
And whatever happened to peace on earth
It went the way of the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy, Willy (not to mention the way of Mugabe, Arafat, bin Laden, Chavez, et al.). Damn shame you've reached Medicare age without every growing up.

Willy Nelson used to have talent, but it appears he's lost it. If anyone finds it, please send it back to him (but pay the postage yourself, or it might be returned - he's been known to be broke).

>And whatever happened to peace on earth

Don't blame Bush, blame that damn black obelisk.

BTW, how fucking bewildered do you have to be to be one of the top-selling recording artists of the past 50 years and wind up bankrupt?

Posted by: Dave S. at January 2, 2004 at 01:32 PM

I thought it was MAGNIFICENT!

Posted by: Saddamn at January 2, 2004 at 01:38 PM

The bard heard the barred herd? But the herd were the Iraqis & the bard was not Willie Nelson.

Some metaphorically keep their heads buried in the ground but Willie Nelson actually looks it.

Posted by: ForNow at January 2, 2004 at 01:42 PM

He was upset because he woke up on Christmas morning and there wasn't any peace on Earth. He's very sensitive.

Posted by: Donnah at January 2, 2004 at 01:51 PM

>There's so many things going on in the world
>Babies dying
>Mothers crying

Events utterly unknown in the previous 35,000 years of Homo Sapiens existence.

>How much oil is one human life worth

Chemically? About a gallon.

>And what ever happened to peace on earth

It's periodically broken out a few times in human history. Traditionally follows and precedes war.

>And the bewildered herd is still believing...

... that Willie Nelson records are worth buying.

>...Everything we've been told from our birth
>Hell they won't lie to me
>Not on my own damn TV

Yes, television (and radio, and the Internet) are totally bereft of hyper-cynical conspiracy theorists, because such people would find no audience amongst the authority-trusting herd.

>But how much is a liar's word worth

I don't know, Willie. Ask the IRS.

>And whatever happened to peace on earth

Ever been in a fight, Willie? Do your scumbag biker fans ever beat people to a pulp? That's "micro." Do your part cleaning up the micro, and the macro will solve itself.

Posted by: Dave S. at January 2, 2004 at 01:57 PM

According to the armed conflict chronology, there's not been peace on Earth for at least 200 years. Of course, the database only goes back to 1800.

Posted by: Donnah at January 2, 2004 at 02:06 PM

Poor ol' Willie. Whiskey River took his mind.

He also opposed the first Gulf War, protesting that it was all about oil, too (it was... for Saddam). I forget, how much oil did we come away with after that one?

Posted by: Lawrence at January 2, 2004 at 02:21 PM

Smoke another bowl, you brain dead piece of shit.

Posted by: packsoldier at January 2, 2004 at 02:39 PM

Willy and Saddam. Saddam and Willy. Think about it. Ever see the two of them together? No. Who, then, was actually captured in that spider hole? Could it be another TV lie? Was it, in fact, Willy? Sure looks like him . . . . .

WILL THIS CONSPIRACY NEVER STOP!?!

Posted by: Lewis at January 2, 2004 at 02:58 PM

What happened to the whiskey for my men, and beer for my horses sentiment, wherein he sang:

Grandpappy told my pappy, back in my day, son
A man had to answer for the wicked that he done
Take all the rope in Texas
Find a tall oak tree, round up all of them bad boys
Hang them high in the streets
For all the people to see

And:

Send 'em all to their maker and he'll settle 'em down

I guess that was just a Toby Keith song that Willie tagged along with for a couple of mercenary dollars. Convictions for rent, cheep.

What do you call a stupid, drunken, ponytailed, bitter, drug-addled, welfare recieving, IRS decieving, self hating, has-been who made a shitload of money then needed Jimmy Carter to bail him out, attempting to be relevant stupid old cunt in boots, wanna-be cowboy?

Willie Nelson

How much oil is one human life worth

I can answer!

Supposedly you can adopt a child in America on the black market for US$1,250. Light crude oil is selling at US$32.52 barrel. So, a human life must be worth around 38 barrels of oil.

Posted by: hast at January 3, 2004 at 12:54 AM

Yep, Saddam killing 1000 people a month was peace on earth.

The fact that more people were killed in the 20th Century by their own government than in war is something a lot of people just can't grasp.

Posted by: John Nowak at January 3, 2004 at 03:11 AM

To quote an old comic strip (Hipshot Percussion, gunfighter in the strip Rick O'shay) "ain't nothing much more peaceful than a dead man, unless it's a graveyard full of dead men."

Posted by: JorgXMcKie at January 3, 2004 at 04:29 AM

Willie Nelson is one of those performers whose politics I choose to overlook. Just as I don't look to G.W. for musical enjoyment, I don't expect Willie to have any great geo-political insight.

Maybe the best insight into the mind of Willie Nelson can be found in the song, "Weed With Willie," in Toby Keith's new album, "Shock n' Y'all." Plus, Willie does not have a good track record of trusting the right people. That's what got him into his financial trouble a few years back.

Posted by: Polly at January 3, 2004 at 05:08 AM

Polly,

How do you do it? I mean overlooking the sage advice of a musician, that is. I mean, if not the artists, then who? Is anyone more grounded in reality that they?

Tell me your secret, please....

Posted by: Jerry at January 3, 2004 at 06:28 AM

OK, now will somebody please explain to this ignoramus exactly what a "shibboleth" is? I looked it up and found the biblical origin but what is the usage here?

Ignorant thanks,

bb

Posted by: bbridges at January 3, 2004 at 07:09 AM

shib·bo·leth

1. A word or pronunciation that distinguishes people of one group or class from those of another.

2.
a. A word or phrase identified with a particular group or cause; a catchword.
b. A commonplace saying or idea.

3. A custom or practice that betrays one as an outsider

Posted by: Lawrence at January 3, 2004 at 07:43 AM

bbridges: Check this out.

Posted by: Ernie G at January 3, 2004 at 07:43 AM

This subject is one really dead horse. Willie writes and sings some good songs, Tim Robbins acts well in his movies, Barbra Streisand...(neva mind) but anyway, if these people had any sense they would not be artists. I appreciate the serious work they do on their day job and I really like the comedy they give us in their spare time.

Posted by: Duke at January 3, 2004 at 08:01 AM

Nothing like a tax cheat who needed an aid concert to help him out of his troubles calling someone else a liar. At least he picked the right candidate to back.

Posted by: darren at January 3, 2004 at 08:08 AM

I wish it were syndication from The onion or Scrappleface or a parody song, but I doubt it.

I wouldn't boycott an artist for merely disagreeing with the war, but when the person:

Alleges the war is all about oil
Views pro-war people as wanting to "kill 'em all"
Views the media as engaged in a giant conspiracy to tell lies

... well I'll be looking for other western singers when looking for music CDs.

Posted by: Andjam at January 3, 2004 at 11:23 AM

Willie Nelson's shtick's been done, and done much better.

And if I'm permitted, I'd like to hijack this forum to plug my October fisking of "Where Is The Love" by the Black-Eyed Peas. Enjoy!

It's a wonder people that st00pid can carry a tune. In Nelson's case, anyway.

Posted by: David Ross at January 3, 2004 at 11:53 AM

Always thought Willie was a little off! Now I now why...he's a liberal at heart...cut from the same cloth as the Ditsy Chicks!

Posted by: Beavis at January 3, 2004 at 12:40 PM

Don't get me going on the Chicks. I ate $200-something bucks on tickets. Natalie's big mouth!

Posted by: Donnah at January 3, 2004 at 12:45 PM

One of the stupidest things about "Where is the love" for me is that it implies the KKK supported war with Iraq - it was opposed to it.

Posted by: Andjam at January 3, 2004 at 01:01 PM

It'll be interestsing to see just how many radio stations pick this song up, given the fact how many radio stations stopped playing the Dixie Chick's stuff after Natalie opened her mouth. Country radio doesn't really play any Willie tunes any way, except for songs like "Whiskey River" and anything he duetted with Waylon Jennings.

Posted by: Angela at January 3, 2004 at 01:51 PM

all i could think of after hearing about that on foxnews...what peace was it that we enjoyed? the peace where we ignored all the rape rooms? the plastic shredders? the mass graves? you call that peace, willie? peace for the dead perhaps, as their suffering has ending. peace for saddam, before we came into the picture, as all those who opposed him were being killed. not the sort of peace i want to be a part of; i'd rather war everyday for the rest of my life.

Posted by: samkit at January 3, 2004 at 02:06 PM

He got airplay for "Beer for My Horses" because it was with Toby. My station, they dast to play the Chicks and we just wore their butt out.

I'll add though, that there's a difference between a singer writing a protest song and a gal shootin' her mouth off to pander to a foreign audience.

Posted by: Donnah at January 3, 2004 at 02:24 PM

I boycott or continue to patronize artists by a sophisticated grading system linked to their looks. Johnny Depp and Viggo Mortensen, good-looking, will continue to see their movies. Sean Penn, looks like a cross between a weasel and a thug, will boycott.

I do have my principles.

Posted by: ushie at January 4, 2004 at 03:11 AM

JorgXMcKie! Omigod, someone who remembers "Rick O'Shay" and friends. I wouldn't go so far as to say that I love you, but my respect for you has increased enormously!
*Mmm-Wah*

Willy could break your heart at The Armadillo in Austin with "Angel Flyin' Too Close to the Ground"...that and a few long neck Shiners.

I think he sold out to the prevailing zeitgeist to use an old Luchenbach expression.
