Having lost the election on both counts, recall and davis for governor, seems the leftoid have set up their fascist-communisto line on Arnie's governorship: think Austria, think hitler.Yup, journalism at its communisto fucktoid best. Suspect Fat Aunty Australian Bolshevik Collective, Age, SMH, will pick it up too, though ,perhaps, just a little more obliquely, less direct, more indirect suggestion than CNN's bit of crap.

Oh, flip, what am I saying, they can't help themselves and run the communisto line boldly.
Fatty Pol Pot Adams and the Australian can be trusted to be so brutally frank.

Posted by: d at October 8, 2003 at 04:55 PM

They compare a US governor with a Nazi?

Ya see, that's why we need Fox News!

Fox News might say, "Schwarzenegger, who, like Maria Von Trapp, protaganist of "The Sound of Music", is a native of Austria..."

Now, Allah willing, we also need in the next week:
1) Yasser dies from his heart attack
2) Saddam gets found/whacked dead
3) the Chicago Cubs rebound from tonight's
loss/Red Sox prepare to meet said Cubs in
Series.
4) I have no hangover tomorrow.

That's a good week.

Posted by: Yobbo at October 8, 2003 at 05:13 PM

If you read the whole article, the Austria/Hitler mention, which appears in the last paragraph, is referencing the accusations that Arnold said he admired Hitler. It seems to me entirely appropriate to mention that Arnold and Adolph are from the same country when discussing that rumour. It's not (IMO) gratuitous, nor is it a shot that suggests Arnold is a Nazi.

If y'all are gonna take this as a shot, the paranoia has gotten hold of you.

Posted by: Troy Wilson of West Coast Eagles fame at October 8, 2003 at 05:15 PM

So now we have Arnee=Hitler, along with Bush=Hitler, Sharon=Hitler etc. For somebody who committed suicide half a century ago, Hitler just seems to be springing up everywhere!

Posted by: TreeHuggingHippyCrap at October 8, 2003 at 05:20 PM

Sheesh, being like Hitler or being a Nazi in modern politics apparently isn't much different than just being a jerk or a poopoo head.

It's shocking that a Republican would have his vote split in California and win an election. The next thing you know, France might revise its socialist work week, Canada may put deeper thought in medical marijuana, tigers might attack Siegfried & Roy, and the Cubs & Red Sox will have a great chance at the World Series...what a world, what a world!

Posted by: Matt from Vegas at October 8, 2003 at 05:20 PM

Arnie has supplied the living monologue more amo to wax vacuously on.Go at it Adams, while the grave merely beckons.

Will Adams, as his swansong, reflect on why totalitarian heaven proves hell, why, given a choice, the unwashed masses reject it, why his chance to be Gulag village idiot did not arise in his time? I bet, Fatty will wax lyrical on those beefy matters, citing all his communisto heroes, including Noam.Fade out to the tunical ode to that rotten communisto bitch,Eva Peron: Don't cry for me Australia... I won't finish, the lines which have occurred to me are just cruel.

Posted by: d at October 8, 2003 at 05:34 PM

So Arnie's governor? Great! I've no idea what his policies are, but what with all these claims of scandal up in the air, Arnie's English-as-a-second-language-difficulties, and his Nazi father, I reckon American politics is going to become a lot more entertaining...

Linda S.

I guess in most other countries the least popluar candidate wins. And the "As does much of my family" cracks me up too.

---"Why are you surprised? They voted Bush in didn't they?"---

Only in America...

Actually, no. Bush lost in California.

---"First Bush gets "elected" and now Arnold. This country is going to Hell quickly. I guess people here are stupider than I thought. Might be time to move before this country totally collapses."---

Fed-up American!!

Maybe Arnie will do a good job, maybe not. If I lived in California I'd vote for him because he's a person who got where he is by hard work. I'd give him a chance.

No qualifications at all?

Leaving aside cheap shots about politicians relying on image-making rather than statesmanship, please note that Schwarzenegger twice built successful businesses well before he entered film acting. As a very young man he bought a failing health club and turned it into a very successful enterprise. Then, when he came to the US and won bodybuilding prizes, he invested them in real estate. Along the way he earned the respect and support of the lawyers, accountants and other professionals whose advice he sought.

That all happened before he set foot on a single stage set. I personally find that VERY relevant experience for solving California's serious financial and regulatory problems. Whether or not the entrenched legislature, which is beholden to many special interests, will rise to the level of serving the public's interest instead, remains to be seen.

Hello world,
I'm a yankee who has never posted anything, anywhere on the web. It's time for me to share a thought with y'all. Americans are their best in tight times. What is set to tear us apart, brings us together.
Henry Ford couldn't build a car, much less change a sparkplug. What he did was pool people who did not only know how, but re-invented an industry.
I think Gov. S will do the same. He's smart and I believe he is sincere. I'm moving to California to be a part of it all, I find it quite exciting.

Posted by: C'ptn Hardbottom at October 9, 2003 at 03:19 AM

> but what with all these claims of scandal up in the air,

There are actually fewer claims, and less substance around them, wrt Arnie than there were with respect to Davis. Or is that different? Why?

> Arnie's English-as-a-second-language-difficulties,

Arnie doesn't have any English-as-a-second-language difficulties. Davis snarked about Arnie's pronounciation of "California". Arnie pronounces "California" as it is pronounced in Spanish. Considering that "California" is a word from Spanish and that Davis claims to be sensitive, tolerant, and a "friend to the Latino people"....

The fact that these were Davis' best arguments doesn't actually make them valid/substantial.

Actually, what this Yank believed, and has had confirmed for the past couple of years is that Australians are "stand up guys", as my uncles used to say.

The "stand up guys" phrase was one of the highest compliments my uncles could pay anyone. They served in WWII with a bunch of Australians. They meant that you could count on Australians to stand up and do the right thing even when it may mean they lost their lives.

Because of my uncles' stories from WWII, I always had a high regard for Australians. I still do. I've been reading Australian blogs and newspapers ever since 9/11. Except for differences, which are really minor, Australians have much the same attitudes, beliefs, and spirit Americans have. What I'd call core values.

I can't see Australians just rolling over and sleeping if they believe there are a group of nutzo terrorists that want to end their way of life. I see the Australians standing up and saying "F*ck You!" to the terrorists. To me, this is the only response that makes any sense at all.

As to the 'silly Effite Whiners', we have them in the US by the bushel. I don't think, for a moment, that they respresent all Australians. I don't think they represent all citizens of the Anglo countries at all.

If someone were to read the NY Times, and watch TV shows like 'Jerry Springer' (ugh!) it's easy to see the perception of the US would be a bunch of correct thinkers & whiners (portrayed in the Times) vs. the rest of us who are barbaric idiots(portrayed by Jerry Springer's show).

Since I'm pretty sensitive about people forming their opinions about the US from our media and entertainment shows, I'd never form an opinion about any country based on the same.

Don't worry about your 'Effite Whiners'. Anyone who has cared has taken the time to get to know many of our allies in the war we are in. I don't believe Australians are to be chracterized by their 'Effite Whiners' any more than the US is.

The 'regular joes/janes' in Australia have pretty much the same values as the 'regular joes/janes' in the US. Live and let live. You don't bother us, we don't bother you. BUT, if you think you can destroy our way of life without us putting up a fight ... you're VERY mistaken. F*CK YOU, to the terrorists!

Nonetheless, they provide seconds, nay, minutes of entertainment to the casual reader. I wonder if they would be able to digest this one: the voters of California demonstrated a REAL COMMITMENT to diversity by electing an immigrant with a rare accent.

Would their little heads implode, I wonder?

He has also been dogged by allegations that he expressed admiration for Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler in a 1975 interview, though those charges largely dissipated after two figures involved in the interview discounted them. Schwarzenegger, who, like Hitler, is a native of Austria, has vehemently denied that he ever had Nazi sympathies.

That's the context for the quote. After reading this, the entire paragraph might should have not been written, but the statement at the end isn't all that unreasonable. I'm sure there are a lot of people in this country who believe that Hitler was born in Germany.

Arnie is from Austria, so some associate him with 'Dolf.

But let's get a real connection with someone's past. Do any Aussies know that US Senator Robert Byrd was once a high official in the Klu Klux Klan, who didn't appreciate the presence of the US Black person in any role other than slavery.
Now eventually US Senator Robert Byrd had a change of view or someone told him that a political career wasn't possible whilst being a member of the KKK and so, he is no longer a member in good standing. We must wonder if he really did quit when a couple of years ago, when he referred to someone as a white n*gg*r in public speech.

Since he was then a member of the all powerful and benevolent democrat party, he did not obtain a very large portion of grief. He basically got a pass.

Rambling back to the future, Arnold is being linked to a Nazi Jackass without any real proof. I was wondering if it isn't more fair to wonder why US Senator Robert Byrd hasn't been excoriated for his PROVEN shady past?

Reasons? 3 words (well 4 words, 2 are in a contraction of 'he is')

HE'S A DEMOCRAT'

Thank You.

Well!
I think your leftists will surely love Joschka Fischer, the german foreign secretary and vice-chancler.
Didnīt finish gymnasium (high-school), tried to learn the profession of a photographer, did give up that, too. Worked a little bit here and there, never had a profession, became professional "revolutionary", and then started his political carreer within the "Green" party.
What would Pritchard and Barlow say about him?
This could only happen in Germany? Or so...?

The CNN paragraph isn't that bad. Mentioning that AS and AH are from Austria is in context. Not a strong context, and it should have been edited out, but I wouldn't call it gratuitous.

milwauken

The comment is stupid and more than a little bigoted that is all.

Imagine if I was a reporter and wrote this about Kobe Bryant: "Kobe Bryant has been fending off accusations that he raped a woman in Colorado. Bryant, like Zacarias Moussaoui, is black."

You'd blow a gasket, wouldn't you? well, this is the same thing, really. Place of birth or ethnicity is not destiny.

I mean what is the theory? The fact that Arnold is austrian makes him more likely to be a nazi? Is every austrian under suspicion now? Now about all Germanic people generally? Its collective guilt in its ugliest form.

A.W.

Re: "Is Aahnuld the first Austrian economist to be elected to a position of power anywhere in the world?"

Eugen von Boehm-Bawerk worked in the Finance Ministry, don't know if in elected or appointed positions. He was on Austrian currency at some point, the 100-Schilling note:

See here.

Carl Menger was appointed tutor to Crown Prince Rudolph for several years; that might have had more significant impacts on later policy had the latter man not killed himself.

This thread was dead half a day ago, by my reckoning, and it's still mostly hilarious.

Way to go, CNN.

Dang. I thought this thread was gonna die soon, now I have to wait for the leftie trolls to come along and start twisting these words.

The comments on the SMH site are absolutely hillarious:

"I agree that there is a lot of prejudice towards the US and the intelligence of its inhabitants paired with bad spelling." writes Tiu Fu Fong

"Good Luck to the big fella.......and bring on Bryan Brown for PM." writes Andrew

I've got nothing to say I just want this comments thread to get to 100.

LA Times' Mark Barabak was interviewed on Melbourne Australia's 774ABC radio last night and referred to Schwarzenegger as an 'Australian bodybuilder'; obviously unintentional but still quite amusing.

Posted by: ilibcc at October 9, 2003 at 11:23 AM

If we can have Kiwis described as Australians, we can only hope that Arnold is described as Australian.

A. W., you're comparing mentioning nationality with mentioning race.

Maybe a more accurate comparison would be "Jaque Chirac has been fending off accusations he is an enemy of democracy. Chirac, like Zacarias Moussaoui, is French."

Posted by: Andjam at October 9, 2003 at 11:54 AM

Read the whole paragraph:

"He has also been dogged by allegations that he expressed admiration for Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler in a 1975 interview, though those charges largely dissipated after two figures involved in the interview discounted them. Schwarzenegger, who, like Hitler, is a native of Austria, has vehemently denied that he ever had Nazi sympathies."

Your quote is taken badly out of context.

Andjam wrote: "A. W., you're comparing mentioning nationality with mentioning race."

Well, think for a moment. We all agree with the principle that racism is wrong. Why is it wrong, though? Well, I think most of us would say that it is a trait that 1) we can't help, and 2) is completely irrelevant.

Well, isn't it exactly the same with national origin? Arnold can't help having been born in Austria, and the fact he was born there is irrelevant anyway.

And are you really going to argue that there is a major moral difference between:

"I hate asian americans."

and:

"I hate chinese americans?"

No, both sentiments are equally reprehenisible.

I did vote for Arnold but after viewing a clip of Mary Carey's that I got from Kazaa, I wish I could take the vote back. That girl got skills. Is "completing the arrow" a good euphemism for masturbation? Spelunking the monkey?

CNN are a cult of unconscionably offensive rapscallion and narcissistic, blood-curdling molesters of small furry animals.

Posted by: that guy at October 9, 2003 at 03:01 PM

Of course none of the commentariat have focused on Arnold's other nazi link - married to a woman whose grandfather - the appalling Joe Kennedy - was a nazi sympathiser and anti semite of epic proportions. I wonder why?

When did CNN staff molest the small fury critters, who raped and bestialised the victims, how, how many times, and have C.I.B been informed and are they about to lay charges against the criminals?

I'm watching Hillary Clinton on the Daily Show. Waiting for her to take a cheap shot at Arnold and, surprisingly, she has resisted. Her official policy must be to take the high road--oh yeah, and the fact that she doesn't want to alienate us Cali plebes who were star struck dumb.

Jon Stewart sucks as usual with his Letterman impersonation and the sucking up. What's fascinating me right now is how when Hillary sits down on the daily show loveseat her ass and thighs take on the proportion of a tractor tire inner tube with two thick logs sticking out with shoes attached.

Gee it looks like your Aussie media types wear the same tinfoil hats American media types do. They sounded as if they weren't dropped on their heads as children but were bounced by their parents. My dad always said that the Aussie troops he fought with were the toughest guys he ever met. I doubt they've changed nor that most Aussies are like the media. Its interesting to see Arnold win but it was clear given the mess the socialists had made of California that even Saddam could have beaten Grey Davis. Maybe even Bin Laden, no thats going too far but....

Almost late enough to be totally off-topic:

Eugen von Boehm-Bawerk worked in the Finance Ministry, don't know if in elected or appointed positions.

In a parliamentary system, members of the Cabinet are usually, but not necessarily, members of the parliament itself. I'd think it's a fair bet that your economist was elected to a seat in the parliament.

Posted by: McGehee at October 10, 2003 at 12:46 AM

I don't think I have seen such bad spelling in my life. Did you even go to school? What makes you think that people want to read your opinion when you're not even intelligent enough to figure out how to write it in plain old English?

Ah, michelle must be one of those finger wagging drudges called an oz teachass.
Geoffrey bernard, `Low life column' related a cruise spoilt by such a type. There was a sign saying no drinking,no smoking on deck.Teachass waggled her finger at him and Bernard told her to, quoting verbatim, `Fuck off.'
