COOPED UP AT THE HILTON

David Penberthy on the defenders of unionist, ALP member, and brothel-keeper Neville Hilton:

How is it that anyone in the same party which brought you Emily's List, the affirmative action rule which, when adopted, was celebrated with a mass rendition of Helen Reddy's I Am Woman, could stick up for a bloke who makes a living from cooping up women for the sole purpose of having repeated sex with men for cash?

Emily’s List. That’d make a great name for a brothel.

Or how about Grandma's Place, featuring Little Red Riding Hood and other assorted underage cuties. As endorsed by the Tasmanian branch of Centrelink.

If the brothel had a sign called "Emily's List" you could rearrange the letters to say "Slimey Slit"

Posted by: Random_Prose at September 5, 2003 at 05:45 PM

Hmmm ... I was wondering how I'd missed all these Labor women standing up for the odious Mr. Hilton, so I read the piece.

How many people could Mr. Penberthy find who had expressed sympathy or support for Mr. Hilton?

One.

And he was a man.

"Emily’s List. That’d make a great name for a brothel."
Particularly if it leaned to the left.

Posted by: slatts at September 5, 2003 at 06:17 PM

Well, Mork, I didn't see any public statements by Jennie George or Sharon Bird condemning Hilton and his brothel.Don't want to upset the local party machine, do we?

Posted by: Rob (No 1) at September 5, 2003 at 06:41 PM

Fork, who put the girls in the freakin' slaphouse, fer chrissake?

Posted by: pooh at September 5, 2003 at 06:56 PM

Image the effect on trade if he signed up Shazza Burrows, Joan Kirner and Jenny George; no need to risk the chicken market when you can go full-on into the vulture trade.

Posted by: Habib Bickford at September 5, 2003 at 07:55 PM

Penberthy needs subbing. Badly. With an atomic chainsaw.

Posted by: slatts at September 5, 2003 at 11:50 PM

Habib,

I hate you !!!

Do you hear !!!

I now have a horrible image in my head that I cannot get rid of - Jenny George with a feather boa, Joan Kirner in fishnets, and Sharon Burrows doing the dance of the seven-army-surplus-blankets.

This may turn me gay.

Posted by: The GOP Elephant at September 6, 2003 at 12:41 AM

Sheesh - why didn't he try "I had no knowledge that there were underage girls at the brothel." It works well enough for ministers (government, not religious) on both sides of politics.

Posted by: Andjam at September 6, 2003 at 12:48 AM

oh, i think many decent, honest, ordinary Australians would think child prostitution is no worse than locking up children in the desert or paying off bankrupt corrupt pacific island nations to allow American prison companies to set up gulags where children who themselves have committed no crime can be incarcerated indefinitely leaving scars on their psyches that will likely never heal?

I know many decent, honest, ordinary Australians who would think that way...

Posted by: Miranda Divide at September 6, 2003 at 02:42 AM

Its late, I'm half pissed, and you don't look good Miranda.

Go away you fucking troll.
Why the hell do you bother?

I bet you're the sort of arsehole who enjoys standing in doorways because you can, and think no-one will belt you.

Posted by: Pedro the Ignorant at September 6, 2003 at 03:16 AM

i bother because i love you, pedro. and one day soon, if you're very good, you may get a chance to belt me in person. until then you'll just have to get it out of your decaying system on Tim's backwater blogmire. i understand. i really do.

Posted by: Miranda Divide at September 6, 2003 at 09:04 AM

Interesting. An IP search of the various IP addresses that "Miranda Divide" (who is also "Billy Blogg," by the way) is using brings up this info:

inetnum: 151.24.0.0 - 151.24.255.255
netname: LIBERO-INFOSTRADA
descr: Free Internet Dial-up Services
descr: Via Lorenteggio 257 - 20152 Milano
country: IT

Etc., etc. Anyway, I have banned the entire range of that IP from the site, so let's see what fun ensues.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at September 6, 2003 at 10:53 AM

Well, that's pretty lame.

Running a political blog with comments and then banning people who civilly disagree with the views expressed is pretty loserish behaviour, in my opinion.

Apart from anything else, it tends to give the impression that you believe that your readers will be more persuaded by the commenter than by you.

Posted by: Mork at September 6, 2003 at 12:25 PM

"Miranda" hasn't been "civilly disagreeing" for some time now. But then again, you and I have already figured out that we both have different ideas of what "civil" means.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at September 6, 2003 at 12:44 PM

Perhaps it would be a little easier to take seriously the conception of "civil" behaviour that you apply to others if you were able to live up to it yourself.

I'm curious: did Tim ask for "Miranda" to be banned, or did you do this off your own bat?

Posted by: Mork at September 6, 2003 at 12:54 PM

None of your business, Mork. I don't have to tell you anything. If you don't like how this website is run, there are so many other blogs.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at September 6, 2003 at 01:47 PM

Well said, Andrea. If "mork" doesn't like the way the site is run, he/she/it should go start their own.

Posted by: Bushy at September 6, 2003 at 02:12 PM

Of course you don't have to tell me, Andrea. I understand that, despite appearances from time to time, you are an adult, and you can do pretty much anything you want. Good for you.

Believe it or not, I, too, understand that if I don't like this web site, there are many others from which to choose.

But I think that you can assume that, given that I've pointed my browser here, it amuses me to visit this one, despite my reservations about aspects of its operation. So you can rest easy on that one.

Posted by: Mork at September 6, 2003 at 02:12 PM

Oh good. I was going to be up all night in a cold sweat worrying about whether or not you'd still visit.

Posted by: Andrea Harris at September 6, 2003 at 03:21 PM

>Hmmm ... I was wondering how I'd missed all these Labor women standing up for the odious Mr. Hilton, so I read the piece.

Hey, Mork, why did you wonder how you missed all these Labor women standing up for Mr. Hilton? Tim didn't claim there were any. Nobody claimed there were.

What the hell are you talking about?

Posted by: John Nowak at September 6, 2003 at 04:13 PM

Andrea you really are very politically uptight, you should get out more. Stuck my the computer all day, reading this rubbish, it could make you extremely politically right due to a lack of exposure to other human beings of a different opinion. Surely you must agree that I'm absolutely correct on this.

(disclaimer: this post has nothing to do with the original thread which details the story of a man who did bad bad things. Then another man came along and "reported" on it via his rightblog and manipulated it into an abuse thread about women in the labor party, which given the nature of the original thread quickly became about little more than women and sex - other than a public banning for the peanut gallery.)

None of your business, Mork. I don't have to tell you anything. If you don't like how this website is run, there are so many other blogs.

in other words, piss off. a fine example of how to be "civilly disagreeing".

Posted by: adam at September 6, 2003 at 06:58 PM

Seriously, when the hell has Miranda/Billy been civil? That last sneering POS he dropped certainly can't count. (Children being tortured in Guantonomo for no reason? WTF is he on?)

Posted by: Tatterdemalian at September 6, 2003 at 07:02 PM

Hey Tatterdemalian, I'm talking about Nauru, not your very own gulag in guantanamo! The site is run by an aussie. get with the (right) program.

good to see andrea shutting down free speech.

Posted by: Miranda Divide at September 6, 2003 at 07:58 PM

When you work how to really exclude me and by proxy all the others in my area then yes, my work will have been done. Good luck with your cut and paste farcing at the world... enjoy your yellow press.

But curious, why does the obscenity of Nauru push you over the edge Andrea?

In the steps of that Blogging Giant Billy Bloggs, the left actually doesn't need you one iota, it prevails despite and indifferent to you. And it will not waste 5 mins mourning your graceful exit from the great contest of political ideas... actually no will notice your;e gone.

But of course, we WILL be watching your every move... you can;t be trusted to be left to your own devices.

Bye for now, it's been such fun pushing your buttons but time to hit the off switch. Andrea you better put some clothes back on Emperor Tim.

Gotta go... I've got a cut-and-paste column to stitch together!

Love Miranda
