MAGAZINE FUN

Mentioned in this week’s Continuing Crisis column for The Bulletin: John Pilger, Osama bin Laden, Jostein Gaarder, The Norwegian Federation for Animal Protection, Bjørn Stærk, Annika Sorenstam, Tiger Woods, Kevin Rudd, Amir Taheri, Christopher Hitchens, Nicole Kidman, Senator Lyn Allison, Adolf Hitler, Genghis Khan, Lance E. Brooks, and Philip Ruddock.

Letter writers remain delighted. You may send your own letter to The Bulletin by clicking here.

UPDATE. Brian Jones writes:

As was very patiently explained to me by a female correspondent, Sorenstam's playing in the PGA means she was playing UP into a better class of play, and therefore Tiger should not by rights be eligible for LPGA events.

No, only those male players who Sorenstam beat should be eligible for LPGA events.

Tim,

From your letters of encouragement and joy:

"The second (point of invading Iraq) was to liberate the Iraqis. Seems even Saddam was not as bad as what is now happening."
Ian Green
Withrop, WA

Stone the crows! Who is this deluded fool who claims that Iraq was actually better off under Saddam's genocidal and terrifying regime?

The answer, I think, lies in his address. For those who don't know Western Australia, Winthrop is a privileged suburb of very large, well-appointed homes, wealthy upper-middle class families and more than its fair share of late model luxury European cars. In short, exactly the sort of place where the more insular locals cannot conceive of anything more dangerous than an inferior chablis, or anything more uncomfortable than a Howard government.

Sounds like a typically majority Liberal-voting suburb to me, a bit like Dulwich or Rose Park.

Even if you are unhappy with the way things have gone post-Saddam, it's still a stupid comment.

Whoever changed your site link at the bottom of the column screwed it up royally. It goes to some weird "Lotus Notes" error page. People still use Lotus for things? I guess they do.

Winthrop, eh? That's about 2 minutes from my place. I'll rustle up a lynch-mob!

(For the record DJ, you're about right, Winthrop is a 15-year-old middle to upper-middle class suburb. But in Perth you can still get a nice house on a good block for under $300,000.)

The writer of this week's winning letter receives a selection of Cadbury Old Gold dark chocolate and a dozen bottles of Australia's famous Wolf Blass Yellow Cabernet.

Dang! I better get scribbling. It should be easy since most of the competition apparently drank the Kool-Aid.

Loved the comment Cracker Barrel Phil. Still chuckling. Am going to go right now and add you to my blog roll.
